We are incredibly fortunate to have Farnham Hospital right here, on our doorstep and within minutes of the local community.

With the NHS stretched, services under pressure and the possibility of changes to services at Frimley, shouldn’t we be asking a very simple question:

What more could Farnham Hospital provide for local people?

We already have GP surgeries there and a physiotherapy unit, although you have to specifically request access to it.

But what about services that would stop people having to travel elsewhere?

Orthopaedics
X-ray services
Diabetic clinics — there was one here until recently
Rehabilitation
Physiotherapy
More outpatient clinics
Other specialist services that could safely be delivered locally

Why should residents have to travel further afield for services that could potentially be provided right here?

Farnham Hospital has the location. It has facilities. Most importantly, it has a community around it that needs accessible healthcare.

So what should we be asking for?

What services used to be available at Farnham Hospital that have disappeared?

Angela Rayner’s announcement this week to pull back and pause council reorganisations across England because of "legal advice" and court challenges from other counties raises serious questions for us here in Surrey.

While places like Essex, Norfolk, and Hampshire get a breathing space review because their local councils fought back, Whitehall has confirmed that Surrey is "unaffected" and will be pushed ahead regardless.

That should make every resident in our town sit up and pay attention.

We are being told we can’t stop because our legislation passed earlier, shadow councils were elected, and the process is "too far down the track". However, nothing can justify being locked into a process just because of an arbitrary timeline, while the Government itself admits the underlying process in other counties was legally flawed.

This is exactly how major mistakes happen in local government. Some of the worst planning, infrastructure, and financial decisions in our town’s history didn’t happen by accident. They happened because a group of people in power failed to challenge the consensus, went along to get along, and refused to stand up on behalf of the people who elected them.

If East Surrey and West Surrey Councils are genuinely going to go live in April 2027, we cannot allow our local representatives to just nod things through.

Whether it is inherited borough debts, planning decisions, or protecting frontline services, we need representatives who are willing to go against the flow, ask the uncomfortable legal and financial questions, and ensure our town isn't quietly sidelined in the name of administrative convenience.

On one hand we can lead the way on the other hand, why should we but if we do are we prepared ?

Today, on Back British Farming Day, I’m proud to stand with Britain’s farmers.
They work tirelessly to produce the food we enjoy, care for our countryside and strengthen our food security.

Whilst today’s lunch happens to be Five Guys, they support British farmers by choosing British produce and buying from British farmers.

🇬🇧 Backing British farming means buying British, eating British and supporting those who put food on our tables. 🇬🇧

Last night was a bit of the straw that broke the camel’s back when there was traffic in West Street at 8pm. Clearly unusual, although, Farnham has had traffic problems going back decades, but not so much in the evenings.

I popped down this afternoon to see what’s actually going on, and the West Street lights appear to be letting through only five cars at a time. Admittedly, if drivers were a little quicker off the mark when the lights change, perhaps seven could get through, but it does seem to be adding to the problem.

I’m sure there’s a great photo of West Street with traffic in the late 50’s, I’ll try and track it down.

I’ve filmed the video in black and white to give us that old Farnham feel!

Pedestrian Crossings – Put Them Where People Actually Cross

Zebra crossings are desperately needed in a few places in town.

Near Lidl, especially with the new building works planned for that area. I’m sure I’m not the only one who ends up jumping the wall because the alternative is such a long way around.

The bottom of The Hart is another obvious location. It’s a long crossing across three lanes of traffic, and getting across it safely is quite a feat.

We also need a pedestrian crossing at the bottom of Castle Street, with potentially another further up. But importantly, they need to be placed where people actually want to cross. If a crossing is positioned too far up the hill, it simply won’t be used as much. Around Long Garden Walk, for example, in Castle Street, a low key zebra crossing would be ideal as people naturally walk down the hill rather than up it.

The same applies at the Lion and Lamb, people come out of there and cross naturally to the shops on the other side because it’s the most convenient route. They aren’t going to walk up or down the street just to use a crossing.

The focus should always be on putting crossings in the middle of areas with high pedestrian movement.

Yes, we should minimise disruption to vehicles where possible, but a crossing that is in the wrong place doesn’t solve the problem. People will simply continue crossing where it’s most natural.

It’s great to see action groups campaigning for more zebra crossings, but we also need to make sure they are properly located. Good town planning should be about understanding how people actually use the streets, not simply putting crossings at the ends of roads.

I’m honestly surprised this wasn’t properly addressed as part of the wider regeneration. Surely common sense should prevail when designing an area around pedestrians.

What’s particularly frustrating is that we are now having this conversation after the works are almost completed. Surely pedestrian movement and safe crossing points should have been considered from the very beginning, rather than being something we are having to address at the eleventh hour.

Traffic across town is getting pretty backed up, and I know it’s frustrating for everyone trying to get where they need to be.

One thing that would really help is keeping the Castle Street junction clear. If you’re coming from Downing Street or West Street and the traffic ahead has stopped, please resist the temptation to move forward and block the junction.

Even if it means waiting for another cycle of the lights, leaving the junction clear allows traffic from other directions to keep flowing and can make a surprisingly big difference to the overall congestion.

We’re all trying to get somewhere…

ROAD SAFETY WARNING – ST CROSS ROAD / EAST ST

The new development on the old Swain & Jones site has caused a fair bit of disruption to the road, with a temporary traffic light system currently operating very close to the junction of St Cross Road and East St.

As you turn into St Cross Road, please be aware that a vehicle may already be waiting at the red light just around the corner. This can be difficult to see until you’ve committed to the turn.

I’ve seen a couple of very near misses over the last few days, so please take extra care when using this stretch of road.

Slow down, be prepared to stop and don’t assume the road around the corner is clear.

Even the local ducks are taking the Blue-Green Algae warnings seriously!

They’re strictly keeping their webbed feet on dry land and abiding by the rules, no swimming today!

While the warning is definitely a bummer for the local pond dippers and swimmers, it’s a much-needed breath of fresh air for the surrounding wildlife. The spot was starting to get a little too crowded and chaotic, so a quiet break is giving nature a chance to rest and reclaim its space.

Stay out of the water, and follow the ducks' lead!
