September is Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Month (FASD) 💛

And on the 9th day of the 9th month, we are raising awareness of FASD and the importance of staying alcohol-free throughout pregnancy.

FASD is a lifelong condition that can happen when a baby is exposed to alcohol during pregnancy.

Alcohol can affect a baby's brain, growth and development, leading to difficulties with learning, behaviour, attention and emotional wellbeing.

The NHS recommends that if you're pregnant or planning a pregnancy, the safest choice is not to drink alcohol at all. This helps reduce the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight and FASD.

National FASD is a charity who provides support, information and education to help prevent FASD and improve the lives of those affected by it.

If you need support with alcohol, you can contact the free Medway alcohol support line👉https://bit.ly/4gA3Uxe

Who you might meet along your feeding journey ✨

There is so much support for you in Medway when it comes to feeding your little one.

🔸Peer supporters
Our peer supporters are fully trained and experienced breastfeeding mums who run free antenatal feeding information sessions. At these sessions you can chat about your feeding choices, pick up some handy hints and tips to get for getting feeding off to a good start as well ask any feeing questions you may have. You can also find out about support available for when your baby arrives.

Come along and speak to them once your baby arrives for support with latch, feeding issues and reassurance chats.

🔸Infant feeding support workers
Our infant feeding support workers are based in the Medway hospital maternity unit and are also out in the community alongside midwives. They can support you with that first feed in the hospital and visit you at home in the first few weeks.

🔸Lactation consultants
Are clinically trained professionals in feeding. You may need to see a lactation consultant for more specialist support to overcome challenges such as slow weight gain, tongue-tie, supply issues and can be referred by peer supporters, health visitors or the infant feeding support workers.

🌙 To the mum up feeding your baby right now🌙

Maybe you're sitting in the dark with one eye open.

Maybe you're scrolling to stay awake.

Maybe you're wondering how many more times you'll be up tonight.

We want to remind you that you are your little one's world.

The night feeds at 2am, 4am and 5am. There is something powerful about these quiet moments nobody sees. The cuddles when everyone else is asleep. The comfort, connection and safety you provide for your baby simply by being there.

If you're feeling touched out, exhausted or overwhelmed, you're not failing. Don't feel guilty. Breastfeeding can be challenging at times and that's perfectly fine to admit.

You are doing one of the most demanding things there is, often on very little sleep that no one sees but you.

Right now, in this moment, your baby feels safe, loved and secure in your arms.

And that is all that matters 💜 You are amazing!

Give us a ❤️ if you're up feeding with us ✨
