Chinese Medicine Health Advice this month:
We have a LOT of clients that come in with sleep issues, and there are many reasons for insomnia in Chinese medicine. One of the causes is, unprocessed thoughts. This is when there are things that we are not thinking about in our daily life, either because we're too busy, don't want to think about them as it might upset us or we've forgotten about them but know something is amiss.
What does this cause according to TCM?(In very brief and loose terms)
When our Conscious or awake mind, doesn't think about something important, our subconscious or sleeping mind will force us to do it instead. And this is why many people wake between 1 and 3am (sometimes a bit later). We consider this unprocessed emotions, thoughts or feelings. So how do you deal with this?
You must make some time in the day to sit without stimulation from phones, TV or other people, to begin even 5 - 10 minutes is plenty. And as we sit there, thoughts will start to come into our minds. As they do, write them down.
As you write them down this allows you to do 2 things. Firstly you can start to look at the problems more objectively as it no longer feels like a vague uneasy internal feeling. Secondly, it allows you to give yourself permission to stop thinking about it. Because even if you put it out of your mind, you've got it down somewhere.
The alternative is to keep it all in your head and constantly say " Oh I mustn't forget ...." with an ever growing list.
If you try to do this every day for at least week it will have start to have a massive impact on how quiet your mind is and how much easier it is to fall asleep.
Of course, if you still want help with sleep issues, whether it's falling asleep, staying asleep or improving quality of sleep. Acupuncture may help you!
