Our new ALEX³ allergy blood test is now available at Montpellier Medical. 🧪

If you've ever wondered “What am I actually allergic to?”, ALEX³ can help to build a much more detailed picture of your individual allergy profile.

Using a single blood sample, ALEX³ measures specific IgE against a very wide range of allergen extracts and molecular allergens — including pollens, house dust mites, animals, foods, insect venoms and more.

This can be particularly useful when symptoms aren't straightforward, when there may be several possible triggers, or when you simply want a clearer understanding of what you're sensitised to.

💙 Feedback Friday from Dr Laura 💙

Every piece of patient feedback is appreciated, but occasionally someone takes the time to write something that really stops you in your tracks.

This was genuinely one of the loveliest and most thoughtful pieces of feedback I have ever received, and I was incredibly touched by it.

Looking after someone in their 90s is about so much more than addressing a list of medical problems. It is about taking the time to listen, understanding what matters to them, treating them with dignity and respect, and building a relationship that makes future care a little easier too.

Those are some of the things I value most about being a GP, so to have them recognised in such a thoughtful way meant an enormous amount to me.

Our health isn't only shaped by blood pressure, blood tests and what we eat. Rest, movement, relationships, time outdoors and giving our brains a chance to properly switch off all matter too.

So this Bank Holiday, perhaps give yourself permission to slow down a little.

Go for a walk. Have a lie-in. Put your phone down. Eat something delicious. Spend time with people who make you happy. Or simply do absolutely nothing for a while.

Looking after your health doesn't always have to feel like hard work.

Could looking after your heart in midlife also help protect your brain?

New research certainly gives us another compelling reason to take our health seriously in our 40s, 50s and early 60s.

Researchers followed more than 12,000 people for an average of 26 years and looked at three important cardiovascular risk factors in midlife:

❤️ High blood pressure
🩸 Diabetes
🚭 Smoking

Those who had none of these three risk factors lived for nearly 13 years longer without developing dementia than those who had all three.

Of course, this doesn't mean dementia can always be prevented, nor does it mean avoiding these three factors guarantees an extra 13 healthy years. Genetics, age and many other factors also influence our individual risk.

But the message is an important and encouraging one: what's good for your heart is often good for your brain too.

Your 40s and 50s are not too early to think about healthy ageing. Knowing your blood pressure, blood sugar and wider cardiovascular risk — and addressing problems early — may have benefits that extend far beyond preventing heart disease.

Prevention isn't only about how healthy you are today. It's about protecting the health you want to have in the decades ahead.

We've all done it.

"It's probably nothing."

"I'll see if it settles."

"I don't want to waste the doctor's time."

Sometimes those thoughts are absolutely right. But sometimes they're the reason people put off seeking help for symptoms that deserve a conversation.

The vast majority of symptoms won't turn out to be anything serious—but it's often impossible to know that without taking a proper history, asking the right questions and, where appropriate, carrying out an examination or arranging further tests.
