Does your child struggle with regular ear infections when swimming? 🏊‍♂️

Mr Raj Bhalla, Consultant ENT Surgeon at The Wilmslow Hospital, shares simple ways to avoid them happening frequently.

Warmth, darkness and moisture create the perfect environment for bacteria to grow in the ear, and whilst you can’t change the climate, you can reduce the risk.

Water getting trapped in the ear is one of the biggest triggers, and if your child experiences any of the below symptoms -
👂 ear pain
👂 redness
👂 itching
👂 blocked or muffled hearing
👂 fluid leaking
.. it's likely that an infection has developed

Mr Bhalla states, "Custom swim moulds designed to keep water out offer a simple solution to protect your children's ears during swimming lessons or family time in the pool, ensuring a healthy and fun swimming experience for everyone."

If you'd like further specialist advice, we can offer you fast access to a wide range of ENT consultants at The Wilmslow Hospital.

Last August, Diane came to The Wilmslow Hospital for CMCJ surgery to treat thumb base osteoarthritis. Here, she shares her story of how the procedure has transformed her life.

“My name is Diane. I am 62 years old and married with two grown-up children. I have a keen interest in gymnastics and was head of preschool gymnastics at Leeds Gymnastics Club. Although I am no longer able to coach, I’m still heavily involved in gymnastics and judge acrobatics at regional level.

Last year, I was experiencing pain in my left thumb joint. I was struggling to steer the car, cut food and twist lids off jars. The pain was severe enough to wake me several times in the night. I was diagnosed with arthritis, and after months of pain I went to see Mr Murray at The Wilmslow Hospital, where he performed a left thumb replacement.

Since then, I haven’t looked back and I am now able to walk our three dogs. I can also cut my own food, loosen lids on jars and steer the car without any pain.

I received all my treatment at The Wilmslow Hospital and my care was second to none.

I live in Leeds and Jade Allen, Mr Murray’s secretary, always managed to get me a scan on the same day as my outpatient appointment. The three-hour round trip was always worth it, and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my care now.

Everyone at the hospital, from the anaesthetist and theatre staff to the nurses and hand therapist, was amazing.

Mr Murray has a brilliant bedside manner and explains everything in detail. He is also an excellent surgeon. I would 100% recommend Mr David Murray and his team.”

Thank you for sharing your story with us Diane, and raising awareness of how life changing this surgery can be. ❤️

61% of menopausal women experience dry eyes. 👀
Are you one of them?

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr Say Aun Quah, explains how as hormone levels change, tear production naturally reduces. This often leads to a type of dry eye linked to aqueous deficiency, where the eyes simply aren’t producing enough moisture.

For many women, simple treatments such as artificial tears can provide relief. But if you find yourself relying on drops multiple times a day, it may be a sign that additional support is needed.

It’s a common symptom, but one that shouldn’t be ignored.

If your eyes feel dry or uncomfortable during menopause, it’s worth getting the right advice.

Make an appointment with a member of our ophthalmology team for tailored support at The Wilmslow Hospital.

This is such fantastic news for blood cancer treatment in the north 💫
We’re really pleased that we’re now able to include CAR T-cell therapy treatment amongst our expanding provision of cancer care at The Christie Private Care.

We've been offering advanced cellular therapies - including CAR T-cell therapy - for nearly a decade, after being one of the first in the UK to introduce this breakthrough in blood cancer treatment. In that time our team has developed extensive experience in delivering this complex therapy and we have seen some remarkable clinical outcomes.

We're delighted to share that The Christie Private Care is now offering CAR T-cell therapy, making it the only independent provider outside of London to deliver this highly specialised treatment.

This milestone builds on our commitment to improving the lives of patients, by expanding access to innovative cancer therapies and outstanding care across the UK.

Dr Ahmed Abdulgawad, Consultant Haematologist says “CAR T-cell therapy represents a major advancement in the treatment of blood cancers, particularly for patients whose disease has relapsed or is refractory to standard treatments. By harnessing the power of the patient’s own immune system, we can offer a highly targeted approach with the potential for lasting responses.”

Are you travelling abroad soon for your holiday? 🛫

Have you checked whether you need any travel vaccinations? 💉

Dr Karim Ghabra, GP at The Wilmslow Hospital, shares a brief overview of our travel vaccinations clinic and his recommendations for planning your vaccines well in advance of your trip.

We can vaccinate you for:
▶️ cholera
▶️ polio (as part of the combined TD/IVP vaccination)
▶️ hepatitis A
▶️ typhoid fever
▶️ hepatitis B
▶️ Japanese encephalitis
▶️ rabies
▶️ tick borne encephalitis

Some vaccinations require multiple doses, and others take time to build full protection — so it’s important not to leave them until the last minute.

If you need an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), we can issue this for you once your vaccination has been completed.

Your holiday is something you’ve likely been looking forward to all year. Let our Primary Care team support you with the vaccinations you need, so you can focus on the fun parts of your trip.

For advice or to speak with a member of our team, please call ☎️ 0161 641 8370
