Long COVID drained my energy completely.
Not normal tiredness.
Not needing an early night.
The kind of fatigue that takes your life, your confidence, your independence, and leaves you watching the world from the couch.
I know that place because I lived it.
After a severe COVID infection, I was left with Long COVID, breathlessness, chest pain, brain fog, exhaustion, and a body that felt like it had forgotten how to recover.
But I also came from a background where giving up was never really an option.
I grew up on a council estate on Hayling Island. You learned early that nobody was coming to save you. You had to look for answers, try things, keep going, and find a way through.
That is what led me to cold water.
Not ice baths.
Not extreme challenges.
Not the macho nonsense.
Just one simple action, done safely at home, using the cold water already coming out of the tap.
Twenty seconds.
Face. Neck. Breath. Body.
That became my route back to energy.
Couch to Recovery is the story of how I found that route, why I believe cold water gave my body a signal it badly needed, and how that simple daily action became part of my lifestyle medicine.
But this book is not just my story.
It includes the voices from the couch — people trapped in fatigue, isolation, Long COVID, burnout, and low energy.
It includes the voices from the water — people who began using cold water and found something shifted.
And it brings in the science, history, and medical thinking behind cold water, the nervous system, energy, resilience, and recovery.
The book is endorsed by Dr Mark Harper, NHS consultant anaesthetist, author of Chill, and one of the leading voices in cold water and health.
This is not a miracle cure.
It is not medical hype.
It is not about pushing through.
It is about one small, repeatable action that helped me rebuild my energy — and may help others take their first step too.
For anyone suffering from Long COVID, chronic fatigue, burnout, or low energy — or anyone who knows someone who is — this is an invitation to discover what helped me find my way back.
No ice. No extremes. Twenty seconds. At home.
Sometimes recovery does not start with another explanation.
Sometimes it starts with one small action in your own bathroom.
