The words you use in labour matter more than you think. đ¤
Think about the difference between saying âcontractionâ and saying âsurge.â
One can make you think: Here comes another painful contraction I have to get through.
The other can help you think: This is a wave. It rises, peaks and passes. My body is doing exactly what it needs to do.
And that shift in language can completely change your association with the sensations youâre experiencing.
⨠Surges instead of contractions
đ Waves instead of pain
đ¤ Sensations instead of something to fear
đ Pressure instead of âsomething is wrongâ
This isnât about pretending labour doesnât feel intense. Itâs about understanding what your brain associates those sensations with.
Because your brain is constantly interpreting what is happening in your body. If you have learnt to associate a sensation with danger, fear or something going wrong, your nervous system can respond accordingly.
Thatâs why understanding your triggers is SO important.
What words make you anxious?
What birth stories have influenced you?
What sensations are you afraid of?
What do you automatically think when someone says âcontractionâ?
Preparation isnât just about learning how to breathe.
Itâs about rewiring the way you think about birth, so when those sensations arrive, you have the tools to respond rather than react.
Your words create your associations.
Your associations influence your mindset.
And your mindset can change your entire experience. đŤśđź
This is exactly why birth preparation matters. đŤ
