Happy September. This month brings five awareness campaigns worth knowing about: Blood Cancer, Gynaecological Cancer, World Alzheimer's Month, Childhood Cancer and Urology Awareness Month.

Very different conditions, but the same message runs through all of them. If something has changed, or something new has appeared and isn't settling, it's worth getting it checked.

When pain has been part of your life for months or years, you learn to work around it. You stop mentioning it, because there's nothing new to say and you've already been told there's not much to be done.

But living with it isn't the same as having it properly understood. Pain that persists is worth revisiting, whether that's a fresh look at what might be behind it, a conversation about what you've already tried, or simply having someone take the time to hear the whole story rather than the last five minutes of it.

The new term is almost here. For some children that's all excitement. For others it's a knot in the stomach that starts building weeks before the first morning.

A bit of dread about going back is completely normal, and for most children it settles within a week or two. What's worth a closer look is when it doesn't ease: trouble sleeping, going off their food, tears or tummy aches most mornings, pulling away from things they usually love, or flat-out refusing to go in.

You know your child better than anyone. If your instinct says something isn't right, that on its own is reason enough to ask.

Talking about bowel symptoms isn't easy, and we understand that. It's a private thing, and it can feel much simpler to wait and hope it settles on its own.

But bowel cancer is being diagnosed in younger adults far more often than it was thirty years ago, and the early signs are usually gentle ones. A change in your usual habits that doesn't go back to normal. Tiredness you can't put down to anything. Bleeding you'd rather not talk about.

In most cases it turns out to be something far less worrying, and finding that out is a weight off your mind. When it isn't, catching it early makes a real difference.
