Chest infections can be serious โ€“ and prevention matters, especially as we head into colder months. ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ’™

Chest infections affect the lungs or large airways. Common symptoms include a chesty cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, a high temperature, headaches, aching muscles and tiredness. Many improve within around 7โ€“10 days, although a cough can last for up to three weeks.

Respiratory illness also places significant pressure on the NHS. Respiratory disease accounts for around 700,000 hospital admissions and 6 million inpatient bed days each year, with demand often peaking during winter.

Damp and mould can affect your lungs too. Damp and mould in the home can increase the risk of respiratory infections and worsen conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and COPD. Government estimates linked damp and mould in English homes with around 8,500 lower respiratory infections in 2019.

Help reduce moisture at home by ventilating rooms, using extractor fans, avoiding drying clothes indoors where possible and dealing with leaks promptly. A dehumidifier can help remove excess moisture from the air, but it's also important to identify and address the underlying cause of damp or mould.

If you have a chest infection and feel very unwell, your symptoms are getting worse, you cough up blood, or you've had a cough for more than three weeks, contact your GP. You should also seek advice if you're pregnant, over 65, have a weakened immune system or have a long-term heart, lung or kidney condition.

From 5th October 2026, we are changing how you book appointments

No more 8:00 am call rush!

We are making an exciting change to our appointment system to make it easier for you to access the right care and improve your experience at the surgery.

From 5th October 2026, we will be moving to a Modern General Practice model. This is part of a national NHS approach being introduced across GP practices to make accessing care easier and ensure patients receive the most appropriate support.

What does this mean for you?

We will be using a total triage system. This means that every request for an appointment will be reviewed before an appointment is offered.

When you contact us, you will first be asked to provide some information about your symptoms or reason for contacting the practice. An experienced GP will then review your request and decide on the most appropriate next step.

We may contact you for further information if needed, to help us prioritise patients who require more urgent care.

Depending on your individual needs, you may be offered:

A face-to-face appointment
A telephone appointment
Advice or treatment from a GP without the need for an appointment
Self-care advice
Signposting to a more appropriate service
How do I request an appointment?

Please visit our website Alliance Teaching Practices and use our online form found on the Contact Us page to request an appointment: Via Accurx

This means you no longer need to call at 8:00 am to request an appointment.

Don't have access to the internet?

That's okay. If you are unable to use the online form, you can still contact the surgery by telephone, and our reception team will be able to assist you.

Thank you for your patience and support as we introduce this new way of working.

๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ is a great opportunity to quit smoking and start feeling the benefits of a smoke-free life. ๐Ÿšญ๐Ÿ’™

Giving up smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. From the moment you stop, your body begins to recover, and over time you can reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, lung disease and many cancers. โค๏ธ

Quitting can be challenging, but you don't have to rely on willpower alone. There is support available to help you manage cravings, choose suitable stop-smoking treatments and find practical ways to stay on track. ๐Ÿค

Taking part in Stoptober gives you the chance to join thousands of other people making a quit attempt this October. Even if you've tried before, don't be discouraged โ€“ every quit attempt can bring you closer to stopping for good. ๐ŸŒŸ

You could also notice benefits such as breathing more easily, having more energy, improving your sense of taste and smell, and saving money. ๐Ÿ’ท

Make this October the month you take your first step towards becoming smoke-free. ๐Ÿšญ

COCHC will be carrying out resurfacing and line-marking works across the entire car park.

To minimise disruption to tenants and patients, the project will be completed in phases:

Phase 1: Disabled parking bay area up to the central road
Phase 2: Opposite side of the car park up to the central road
Phase 3: Car park entrance, to be completed overnight where possible to reduce disruption
Phase 3.5: Remaining central roadway, completing the project
A map is attached to help illustrate how the phased works will be carried out.

Phases 1 and 2 are expected to take approximately two weeks each. Phases 3 and 3.5 are expected to take a further two weeks.

Please note that these timescales are subject to weather conditions and any unforeseen issues that may arise.

The current anticipated start date is the 21st of this month; however, this has not yet been confirmed. Once the start date is finalised, I will provide a further update.

We appreciate that these works may cause some inconvenience and will do everything possible to minimise disruption. Thank you for your cooperation while these essential improvements are completed.

Looking after your s*xual health is an important part of your overall wellbeing. Whether it's attending cervical screening, getting vaccinated against HPV or seeking advice when you need it, small steps can make a big difference. ๐ŸŒธ

Cervical screening (smear tests) is offered to eligible women and people with a cervix to help prevent cervical cancer. It checks for high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that most people will have at some point in their lives. In most cases HPV causes no problems, but some types can increase the risk of cervical cancer if left untreated. ๐Ÿฉบ

Cervical screening can detect HPV before it causes abnormal cell changes, meaning treatment can be offered early if needed. It is one of the best ways to protect yourself against cervical cancer. ๐Ÿ’œ

You can also help protect yourself by:
โœ”๏ธ Attending cervical screening when invited.
โœ”๏ธ Ensuring your children receive the HPV vaccination when offered.
โœ”๏ธ Practising safer s*x.
โœ”๏ธ Speaking to a healthcare professional if you have any concerns about your s*xual health.

If you receive your invitation for cervical screening, don't put it off. It could save your life. ๐Ÿ’™

Cold weather can make asthma symptoms worse, but a few simple steps can help you stay well this winter. ๐Ÿ’™โ„๏ธ

Breathing in cold, dry air can narrow your airways, making it harder to breathe and increasing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and breathlessness. If you have asthma, it's important to be prepared before heading outside. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ๐Ÿซ

Here are some tips to help protect your lungs:
โœ… Wear a scarf loosely over your nose and mouth to help warm the air you breathe.
โœ… Try breathing through your nose rather than your mouth.
โœ… Check the weather forecast before going out and limit your time outdoors during very cold weather if possible.
โœ… Dress in several thin layers to stay warm.
โœ… Continue taking your preventer inhaler exactly as prescribed, even if you're feeling well.

Know your asthma action plan and seek urgent medical help if your symptoms become severe. ๐Ÿš‘
