Did you know your spine actually 'shrinks' its bone count as you grow? 🦴
While we start out with 33 individual vertebrae during development, an adult spine technically has 26 distinct bone structures. This is because the bones at the base of your spine fuse together over time!
Here is how that incredible 33-vertebrae breakdown plays out:
🔹 7 Cervical (C1–C7): The neck support system that allows you to nod and shake your head.
🔹 12 Thoracic (T1–T12): The anchors for your ribcage, protecting your vital organs.
🔹 5 Lumbar (L1–L5): The heavy-lifters! These powerhouse vertebrae carry most of your body weight.
🔹 5 Sacral (S1–S5): These fuse together into one solid, shield-shaped bone called the sacrum.
🔹 4 Coccygeal: These small bones fuse to form your coccyx (tailbone).
Because your spine is such a complex, interconnected system, it is highly susceptible to wear and tear. In fact, those 5 Lumbar vertebrae (your lower back) are among the most commonly injured areas due to daily strains like heavy lifting, poor posture, twisting, and long hours sitting at a desk.
If you are experiencing back pain, neck stiffness, or posture-related discomfort, you don't have to just live with it. Maria and the team here at Central Chiropractic Clinic is here to help you get back to moving freely.
Let's look after those 33 (or 26!) bones together. 👇
