Ever feel like your thoughts are too loud for the room you’re in? ☁️✨

When you’re feeling overwhelmed or confused, your internal world can feel cramped and cluttered.

As a psychotherapist, I often guide my clients to look for the “big sky.” There is a profound psychological shift that happens when we trade our screens for a vast view or a wide-open horizon.

Why the Vastness Matters:

☁️ The “Small Self” Effect: Research shows that experiencing vastness triggers awe, which naturally diminishes the “ego” or self-focus. When you feel small in the face of a massive sky, your worries often follow suit.

☁️ Quieting the Noise: Studies using fMRI scans found that awe-inspiring views can quiet the brain’s Default Mode Network (DMN) the area responsible for rumination and overthinking.

☁️ Cognitive Accommodation: Perceptual vastness forces our minds to “make room” for a new perspective. It’s like hitting a mental reset button that helps you see the bigger picture when you’re stuck in the details.

☁️ Physiological Grounding: Just 15 minutes of looking at a wide, open landscape can lower cortisol levels and heart rate, physically moving your body from “threat mode” to a state of calm.

Next time your head feels too full, find a horizon. Let the sky hold the weight for a while. 🌬️⛰️

The weather lately has felt heavy, hasn’t it?

Almost as if the grey skies are pressing down on us, making the days feel longer and the path a little steeper. ☁️

When the world feels dark and a bit oppressive, our minds tend to follow suit. But even in the deepest stretch of winter, nature is quietly preparing.

I’ve been intentional this week about looking for glimmers ✨ those tiny signs that the season is shifting:

⭐ The delicate white heads of snowdrops lining the hedgerows.

⭐ The soft, dancing catkins on the trees.

⭐ The first lambs finding their feet in the fields.

Taking a moment to truly notice these things doesn’t change the weather, but it can change how we feel within it. It reminds us that “stuck” is often just “waiting.”
