You may hear the term neuromotor immaturity and wonder what it actually means in practice.

In simple terms, it refers to the continued presence of early movement patterns, often called primitive reflexes, that would usually integrate within the first year of life.

These reflexes play an important role in early development, but if they remain active for longer than expected, they can begin to interfere with how the body is controlled and coordinated.

This can show up in a number of ways, including difficulties with balance, posture, attention, or managing emotions, often in quite subtle ways at first.

INPP assessments are designed to look at these patterns in a clear and structured way, helping to identify whether neuromotor development may be contributing to the challenges a child is experiencing.

Understanding this can often provide a different perspective on difficulties that might otherwise be put down to behaviour or lack of effort.

"I am better able to support her because she is better able to tell me what she needs."

That's how one parent describes the change in her relationship with her daughter, following her daughter's 13-month INPP journey. Beyond the academic progress, she describes her daughter developing a deep self-awareness: the ability to name her feelings, understand her needs and express them thoughtfully. Her siblings, though older, now go to her for guidance.

This quote comes directly from the parent's own reflection, shared with us following her daughter's completion of the INPP programme.

INPP, the Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology, is the international authority in this field, working with retained primitive reflexes and neuromotor immaturity through a structured, assessment-led method. One of the key principles behind the Ronnie Gardiner Method is neuroplasticity.

This is the brain’s ability to adapt, reorganise and form new connections.

Through repeated, structured stimulation using rhythm and movement, RGM helps encourage this process.

For people living with neurological conditions, this can play an important role in maintaining and improving function over time.

INPP, the Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology, has seen increasing interest in its INPP in Schools training programme, with courses now taking place in a growing number of locations across the UK.

Kath Clough of Chrysalis NDT recently hosted the training day for the second time in Welwyn Garden City, bringing together educational professionals keen to learn more about child development, movement and the foundations that underpin learning and behaviour.

Many people assume they would need to travel a long distance to attend. New courses are added regularly in response to demand, so there may already be one taking place closer to home than expected.

Our next training day takes place in Burford on Friday 25 September 2026.

The Ronnie Gardiner Method is named after its founder, and his background as a musician is central to understanding why the method works the way it does.

Ronnie Gardiner noticed that rhythm, movement and music together created something that felt different from other kinds of exercise or rehabilitation. The structured, beat-driven nature of his approach came directly from his experience as a drummer and his understanding of how rhythm organises the body and focuses the mind.

What he developed in the 1990s has gone on to be used internationally, across a wide range of ages, abilities and settings.

What the INPP practitioner training involves

The INPP Practitioner Course is designed to build knowledge step by step, combining theory with practical assessment skills.

After completing the first module, trainees attend Module 2 which includes an intensive week of in-person training.

One practitioner recently reflected on her experience after completing the Bristol training week:

“Module 2 of the INPP Reflex Integration course was a turning point for me. It brought clarity to concepts I had been learning and helped everything fall into place.”

During the training, practitioners deepen their understanding of how retained primitive reflexes can influence everyday functioning in children and adults.

They also develop the practical skills required to assess reflexes and observe patterns that may contribute to learning, behavioural or developmental difficulties.

The week includes:

• structured teaching on neurodevelopment
• practical assessment training
• case discussion and observation
• supervised learning with experienced tutors

This balance of theory and practical application is a key part of the INPP training approach.

When you are looking for support for your child, it is natural to focus on the type of help being offered, but the training and experience of the practitioner is just as important.

INPP practitioners complete detailed training that looks at how child development, learning difficulties, and movement patterns are connected. A key part of this training is not just understanding the theory, but learning how to assess and work with children in a careful and structured way.

“We would practise ourselves with guidance throughout.”

This kind of preparation helps ensure that the support your child receives is based on a clear understanding of what to look for and how to respond, rather than guesswork.
