Any aromatherapy oils that have relaxant or sedative properties will help your body get the reminder that it needs to slow down; after all, that’s what essential oils are doing – reminding the body of its own natural wisdom. Plants don’t just produce essential oils for us humans to use and enjoy. They are functional tools evolved over millions of years that provide plants with significant adaptive advantages. Whilst not required for the plants basic survival these aromatic compounds serve several important functions: -

🌿Aiding reproduction

Flowering plants rely on insects and other pollinators to transfer pollen in order to reproduce. Essential oils help attract pollinators to nectar rich flowers, help insects distinguish between species and increase pollination efficiency.

🌿Defending against insects and other predators

Many essential oils are toxic, bitter, or pungent which helps deter insects, fungi, and grazing animals. In some cases, the plant can even increase essential oil production when under attack.

🌿Antimicrobial protection

Essential oils can help protect the plant against fungi, bacteria, and other microbes that can infect and damage plants and weaken growth. They can also help protect and heal damaged plant tissue and support overall plant health.

🌿Environmental protection

Essential oils can help plants be more resilient to heat and other environmental stressors. Not only can they protect the plant against moisture loss, but they can also provide a protective layer on leaf surfaces and help regulate plant temperature.

🌿Protecting against competition

Neighbouring plants compete for sunlight, water, and nutrients. Some plants produce essential oils to prevent or control the growth of competing plants, in order to protect their access to vital resources and increase their chance of survival.

As you can see essential oils are not simply nice fragrances that we can use in diffusers or candles – they are one of nature’s most sophisticated survival systems, constantly changing in their composition to help plants adapt to an ever-changing internal and external environment.

While they can be seen as a luxury, massages are often part of healthcare – here’s how they affect physical and mental health

January has a reputation for being the most depressing month of the year. With the magic of Christmas over, it’s easy to feel down in the dumps and fall into a lull. The festivities can leave us both physically and emotionally exhausted, causing our stress response to kick in, which drains us further and lowers our mood. Fewer daylight hours also takes its toll on our body, affecting a variety of neurochemicals inside the brain! We tend not to notice this as much during the busy Christmas period but when we return to the daily grind it can hit us quite hard and the January blues are born!

In most cases you’ll find that your mood will naturally readjust and improve within a few weeks. In the meantime, try using essential oils that have naturally uplifting effect on the psyche! Some of our favourites are Elemi (a super-effective stress reliever), May Chang (the oil of tranquillity), Geranium (to lift and balance the emotions), Bergamot (nature’s prozac), Frankincense (which is nurturing for the soul) and Sweet Orange (an endlessly bright, cheerful oil).

Feel like you need to cleanse and detox after all the festive food and drink. Start each day with a glass of warm lemon and ginger water before breakfast to help eliminate toxins and boost immunity. You can also use our essential oil of the month, Spanish Lavender Sage, in a detoxifying whole body massage blend.

Mix 3 drops Spanish Lavender Sage, 2 drops Lemon, 1 drop Juniperberry and 15ml carrier oil.

Before applying the oil, brush your skin with a body brush, working in an upwards direction towards the heart. Then lightly massage the oil into your skin, working in the same direction. Doing this daily, coupled with drinking your lemon and ginger water will help to support your body’s natural detoxification process. Buy our Spanish Lavender Sage this month and SAVE 25%. tinyurl.com/3nsc5nbk
