I still hear this from new clients occasionally. That the consultation feels like paperwork standing between them and the "real" appointment.

I'd push back on that completely. The consultation is where I find out what your skin can actually handle, where sensitivities and underlying causes get identified properly, and where I decide what your first facial should actually be, rather than picking something generic.

This matters for everyone, but it matters even more for deeper and South Asian skin tones, where a reaction that goes unnoticed can leave pigmentation behind for months.

Skipping this step doesn't save time. It removes the one part of the process designed to protect your skin.

This is why I hold this line for every client, no exceptions, regardless of how simple a concern looks on the surface.

Understanding why this step exists means you'll never feel like it's slowing your appointment down. It's what makes the rest of it work.

After years of consultations, I've noticed something that connects almost every client whose skin genuinely transforms.

It's never the ones who wanted to skip straight to treatment. It's the ones who let me properly assess their skin first, even when they were impatient to get started, even when they assumed they already knew what was wrong.

The clients who trust that process tend to get results that actually last. Not because their skin was somehow easier to treat, but because we started from an accurate understanding of what it needed, rather than an assumption about what it needed.

This is a pattern I notice constantly, and it's one of the reasons I hold the consultation and first facial together as one process rather than two separate bookings.

Skin that's properly understood from the very first visit responds differently to treatment than skin that's been guessed at. I see the difference every single week.

If you're about to book your first visit, this is worth knowing before you come in, not just after.

I turn away bookings for this reason more often than people would expect.

If someone wants a facial without a consultation first, the answer is no, every time. Not because I want to make the process harder than it needs to be, but because I built my entire way of working around properly understanding skin before I ever treat it.

I've seen what happens when that step is skipped. Skin that reacts. Treatments that don't work because they were never matched to what was actually going on. Trust that takes far longer to rebuild than it took to lose.

I'd rather ask someone to book properly, consultation and facial together, than treat their skin without knowing what I'm treating. That's not a policy I'm willing to bend, even when it costs me a booking.

If you've got questions about why the process works this way before you book, send me a message. I read every one.

Picking a facial based on how your concern looks is one of the easiest ways to end up disappointed by the result.

I see this often. A client has a concern, pigmentation, breakouts, dullness, and picks the facial that sounds like it matches. Sometimes that's the right choice. Often, it isn't, because what's driving the concern isn't always what it looks like on the surface.

This is exactly what the consultation is for. It's where I find out what's actually causing what you're seeing, rather than treating based on a description alone. Once I know that, the right facial for you becomes clear, and it's not always the one you would have picked from a list.

This is why I don't let clients choose a facial before we've had that conversation. Not because I'm being difficult, but because guessing at this stage is exactly how facials end up not working.

If a facial you've had before didn't quite deliver what you expected, this is often the reason why.

One appointment won't fix your skin, and I'd rather tell you that upfront than let you find out after a single facial doesn't change much.

Your first visit with me is the beginning of understanding what your skin actually needs, not a one-off treatment to try and see. It starts with a proper consultation. Then comes your first facial, chosen specifically based on what I've found, not picked from a generic menu.

From there, I can tell you what a realistic plan looks like. Some skin needs a few sessions before change becomes visible. Some needs longer. All of it needs to be built on what I actually found in that first assessment, not a guess about what "should" work.

This is why I don't sell single facials as quick fixes. I build plans, because that's what actually gets skin to a place where it holds its progress, rather than needing to be corrected again a few weeks later.

If you're ready to stop trying single treatments and start with something built specifically around your skin, this is where that begins.

A consultation and first facial together is where your plan actually starts. If you're ready for that, I'd love to see you in for one.

If you have deeper or South Asian skin, this matters more than most people realise.

Inflammation behaves differently on deeper skin tones. Left untreated or handled the wrong way, it doesn't just calm down and fade, it can leave pigmentation behind that takes far longer to correct than the original concern ever needed.

This is exactly why I never skip the consultation and patch test before a first facial. I need to see how your specific skin responds before I introduce anything new to it, particularly with skin that's more prone to this kind of reaction.

I understand this because I've spent years treating it, and because it's my own skin too. It's not a marketing angle to me. It's the entire reason I built my process the way I have.

Your first visit will always include this step, because protecting your skin from a reaction matters more to me than rushing you into a treatment.

If skincare advice has ever felt like it wasn't written with your skin tone in mind, that gap is exactly what this process is built to close.

Sensitive skin isn't one condition, it's a description that can mean several different things.

I see this misunderstood constantly. A client tells me their skin is sensitive, expecting that to be enough information for me to know what to do. It rarely is.

Sensitivity can come from a barrier that's been stripped by over-exfoliation. It can come from a reaction to something still in someone's routine that they haven't connected to their skin's behaviour. It can be an early or undiagnosed form of rosacea that's never been properly looked at.

Each of these needs a different plan. Treat them all the same way, and you either see no change at all, or you make things worse without meaning to.

This is why testing and proper assessment matter so much on a first visit. I'm not confirming what you already think is wrong. I'm finding out what's actually happening, so the treatment matches the cause, not just the description.

If you've been told your skin is "just sensitive" without much explanation beyond that, it might be worth having it properly looked at.

Most clients don't realise how much I'm assessing before we've even discussed a treatment.

I'm looking at how the skin reacts to touch. I'm looking at tone, texture, and how the barrier is holding up. I'm asking about products used in the last few weeks, not just the ones used every day. I'm checking whether there's sensitivity that hasn't shown up as an obvious reaction yet.

None of this is small talk. Every question and every observation feeds directly into the plan I build for that first facial.

This is also where I manage expectations properly. If your skin needs a gentler first treatment than you were hoping for, I'll tell you, and I'll tell you why. If it can handle more, I'll tell you that too.

This is the part of the process that doesn't show up in a photo, but it's the part that decides whether your treatment actually works for you or just happens to you.

I'd rather spend ten minutes understanding your skin properly than spend an hour treating it based on a guess.

Knowing what happens in this part of your first visit means nothing about it will feel rushed or unfamiliar when you come in.

I hold this line for every single new client, no exceptions.

You won't be able to book a facial with me without a consultation first, and I want you to understand why before you book, not after.

Skin that looks similar on the surface is often behaving completely differently underneath. I've seen it enough times to know that treating without properly understanding what I'm looking at isn't a shortcut, it's a risk I'm not willing to take with your skin.

The consultation is where I find that out. It's where I test, ask, and observe before I decide what your skin actually needs.

This is exactly why my results tend to hold. Not because the treatments are more advanced than anywhere else, but because I never start until I actually know what I'm treating.

If you've never had a facial start this way before, that's worth knowing before your next booking, not after it.

There's a version of this industry where a facial is just a facial. Pick one, book it, turn up, lie back.

That's never been how I work.

Every first visit starts with a proper assessment. I look at what's actually happening in the skin, not just what it looks like on the surface. I ask about products, history, sensitivities, reactions you might not have connected to your skincare at all. Where I need to, I test before I treat.

Only once I understand what I'm working with do we move into the facial itself.

This isn't me being overly cautious. It's the difference between a treatment that's right for your skin and one that simply happened to your skin.

If you've had facials before that didn't quite land, this is very often why.

Understanding this before you book means you know exactly what to expect from a first visit with me, and why it looks a little different from a standard facial appointment.
