Why do we recommend a course of PRP or PRF rather than one session?

Because hair does not change overnight. Your follicles work on a cycle, so treatment works with that cycle, in sessions about four to six weeks apart, with maintenance every six to twelve months.

PRP and PRF both use a small sample of your own blood, so there is nothing synthetic involved.

What is a trichologist, and why see one?

Trichology is the scientific study of the hair and scalp. A trichologist investigates the underlying cause of hair and scalp problems rather than just managing the symptoms.

A GP appointment is short and hair loss is rarely the priority. A dermatologist focuses on the skin. A trichologist spends the whole appointment on your hair and scalp, under magnification, alongside your history, diet, stress and hormones.

Conditions we see regularly: pattern hair loss, sudden shedding, alopecia areata, scalp psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, dandruff, and thinning linked to nutrition or hormones.

Why is my hair thinning?

It rarely has one cause. These are the five we see most:

1. Genetics. Hereditary hair loss is the most common form in men and women.
2. Hormones. Pregnancy, postpartum, menopause, thyroid imbalance, PCOS.
3. Nutrition. Low iron, vitamin D, B12, zinc or biotin.
4. Stress and lifestyle. Physical or emotional stress, poor sleep, diet.
5. Scalp conditions. Seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis and fungal infections.

The most important step is not to wait and hope it sorts itself out. Early action consistently gives better outcomes.

TONIC SCALP FACIAL, £45
Gentle exfoliation, pH rebalance, massage. About 45 to 60 minutes. The everyday refresh for buildup, dryness or a first professional scalp treatment.

INTENSE SCALP FACIAL, £65
A deeper clean with a medical-grade ointment and micro-mist steam. About 60 to 75 minutes. For stubborn buildup, oily or congested scalps, and conditions like psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Add a blow wave to either for £25.

Most people only start paying attention to their scalp once there is a problem. Thinning at the temples. More hair on the brush. A parting that seems wider.

By then, changes in the follicles have often been going on quietly for years.

Your scalp is living skin. Poor circulation, product buildup, inflammation and dryness all affect how well follicles perform, even with a full head of hair. And once follicles have gone dormant or miniaturised, reversing it is much harder than looking after them early.

Prevention is easier than repair. A regular scalp facial or a check-in with a trichologist now is far cheaper, in every sense, than rescue later.

What actually happens in a trichology consultation?

It is a full 60 minutes, one to one, in private.

• a close look at your scalp and hair under magnification
• your medical and lifestyle history
• a clear diagnosis based on what we find
• a personalised plan, in writing

The fee is £120, and £100 of it comes back to you as credit against selected treatments if you decide to go ahead. If you would rather just take the plan away and think, that is completely fine.

Most people tell us they walk in nervous and walk out with a plan and a lot less worry.

Sudden shedding is frightening. One week your hair feels normal, the next it is all over the shower floor.

Here is the reassuring part: it is usually a symptom, not permanent hair loss, and it is often reversible once the cause is found.

The most common culprit is telogen effluvium. Stress on the body pushes lots of follicles into the shedding phase at once. The triggers we see most:

• illness, surgery or infection
• emotional stress or poor sleep
• hormone changes (post pregnancy, coming off contraception, perimenopause, thyroid)
• rapid weight loss or dieting
• low iron, vitamin D, B12 or protein

It usually starts two to four months after the trigger. The key is not to guess. Check recent stressors and get the right blood tests before spending money on supplements.
