At The Ear Clinic We don’t just see a hearing test result and fit a hearing aid…….

We see a person an individual who needs a solution to how their life is being affected by not hearing clearly and not understanding what has been said.

Why can you sometimes hear someone perfectly in a quiet room, but struggle to understand them in a busy restaurant?

It’s not simply about volume.

When we listen, the brain is constantly analysing the acoustic environment identifying speech, locating where sounds are coming from, recognising familiar voices and using contextual information to predict and fill in what may be missing.

This is incredibly sophisticated.

Modern hearing technology is now beginning to work in a much more brain-aware way.

Rather than simply amplifying everything, advanced hearing aids can analyse the acoustic environment in real time and continuously adjust how sound is processed.

🔹 Speech and environmental sound classification
🔹 Spatial awareness and localisation
🔹 Dynamic noise management
🔹 Hearing aid users listening intentions. Analysing head and body movements.
🔹 Transient sound detection
🔹 Machine learning and AI-based sound processing
🔹 Neural-network technology trained to preserve speech while reducing unwanted noise

The goal isn’t to create an artificial, silent world.

It’s to preserve the richness and context of natural sound, while making the sounds you need to understand more accessible to your brain.

And this matters because listening is an active neurological process.

🎧 Good hearing technology shouldn’t simply make sound louder or get rid of all background noise.

It should help your brain organise, interpret and understand sound. Understand what is being said.

At The Ear Clinic, we’re interested in what happens beyond a hearing test and how you actually hear and communicate in the real world.

Because the ultimate test of hearing isn’t:

“Can you hear the sound?”

It’s:

“Can you understand what matters?”

Could Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) Be Causing Your Ongoing Dizziness?

Most people will experience dizziness at some point in their lives. This might happen after an ear infection, an episode of vertigo, or even when standing up too quickly. Usually, it settles without any lasting effects. But for some people, the feeling of being dizzy or unsteady simply doesn’t go away.

If you’ve been feeling off balance for months or even years, especially if tests have come back normal, Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) could be the reason.

Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) is becoming increasingly recognised by healthcare professionals and is one of the most common causes of long-term dizziness.

What is PPPD?

PPPD is a condition that affects the way the brain processes balance information relating to our body, eyes and inner ear.

It develops after an event that disrupts the balance system, such as:

An episode of vertigo.
An inner ear problem.
A concussion or head injury.
Vestibular migraine.
A significant illness.
A particularly stressful period or panic attacks.
For most people, the brain adapts once the original problem has improved. With PPPD, however, the brain continues to rely on overly cautious balance strategies, making normal movement feel uncomfortable, disorientating or unsettling which can trigger anxiety.

This doesn’t mean there is ongoing damage to the inner ear. Instead, the balance system has become overly sensitive.

What Does PPPD Feel Like?

People describe PPPD in different ways, but some of the most common experiences include:

Feeling unsteady even though they haven’t actually lost their balance.
Feeling overwhelmed in supermarkets, shopping centres or busy streets.
Dizziness when scrolling on a phone, using a computer or watching fast-moving scenes on a screen.
A constant sense of dizziness or light-headedness.
Feeling as though they’re floating, walking on a boat or soft ground.
Symptoms that are worse when standing or walking.
Symptoms tend to be present on most days and often fluctuate. Some days are better than others, but the feeling rarely disappears completely without treatment.

Why Do Busy Places Make It Worse?

Many people with PPPD notice that certain places are particularly challenging. Supermarkets are a common example.

That’s because your brain uses information from your eyes, inner ears and body to keep you balanced. When the brain becomes more dependent on visual information, busy environments filled with movement, bright lights and crowded spaces can become overwhelming.

It’s not unusual for people to start avoiding these situations because they know they’ll feel worse afterwards.

Is It Related to Anxiety?

This is an area that often causes confusion.

PPPD is a genuine medical condition. It isn’t “just anxiety” and the symptoms are not imagined.

That said, living with dizziness every day can understandably make people anxious. Worrying about symptoms or avoiding activities can also make the brain even more sensitive, creating a cycle that’s difficult to change or break.

Treating PPPD often involves addressing the physical symptoms, emotional symptoms and the way the brain has adapted after the original illness.

How Is PPPD Diagnosed?

There isn’t a single test that confirms PPPD.

Instead, a healthcare professional will listen carefully to your symptoms, ask about your medical history and rule out other possible causes of dizziness.

Many people with PPPD have already seen several healthcare professionals before receiving the correct diagnosis. While that can be frustrating, getting an explanation for what’s been happening is often an important step towards recovery.

Can It Be Treated?

Yes. Although recovery doesn’t happen overnight and can take several months, many people make excellent progress with the right treatment.

Treatment may include:

Vestibular rehabilitation exercises to help retrain the balance system.
Education about how PPPD develops and why symptoms persist.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for people who have developed fear or avoidance around movement.
Medication (prescribed by a doctor) in some cases, where appropriate.
Treatment is tailored to the individual, and many people benefit from a combination of approaches.

When Should You Seek Help?

If you’ve been experiencing dizziness or unsteadiness for several months, particularly if it affects your work, driving, shopping or everyday activities, it’s worth seeking professional advice.

Persistent dizziness shouldn’t simply be accepted as something you have to live with. The right assessment can identify what’s causing your symptoms and help you access the most appropriate treatment.

The Bottom Line

Living with PPPD is incredibly frustrating and impacts on all areas of life. Many people feel as though no one understands what they’re experiencing because they “look fine” on the outside. But persistent dizziness is real, and so is the impact it can have on everyday life.

The encouraging news is that PPPD is treatable. With the right diagnosis, guidance and rehabilitation, many people regain their confidence, become more active and see a significant improvement in their symptoms.

If you’ve been living with ongoing dizziness or balance problems, don’t put off seeking help. The sooner you understand what’s causing your symptoms, the sooner you can begin working towards recovery.

Could your mild hearing difficulties affect your brain health?

Many people think hearing loss is just about missing sounds.

But it can affect much more than your ears.

When hearing becomes difficult, your brain has to work harder to understand speech especially in noisy environments. Over time, this increased listening effort can leave people feeling tired, frustrated and less confident in social situations.

Hearing loss is also associated with:
🧠 Increased cognitive load
🤝 Social isolation and reduced communication
📉 A higher risk of cognitive decline

Research has highlighted an association between untreated hearing loss and an increased risk of dementia. While hearing aids are not a cure for dementia, addressing hearing loss may be an important part of supporting communication, independence and brain health.

Think about it…

When you improve your hearing, you are not just turning up the volume.

You are helping your brain stay connected to the people, conversations and experiences that matter most.

👂 Do you have your eyes tested every two years?
But when did you last have your hearing checked?

A simple hearing assessment could be the first step towards protecting your communication, confidence and quality of life.

Don’t wait until you’re missing out. Look after your ears — they’re connected to your brain.

👂 You have your eyes tested every two years… but when was the last time you had your hearing checked?

Most of us wouldn’t ignore changes in our eyesight. We book an eye test without thinking twice.

But what about our hearing?

Hearing loss often develops so gradually that many people don’t realise how much they’re missing until someone else points it out.

It isn’t just about turning the television up louder.

Untreated hearing loss can lead to:
🧠 Increased listening effort and mental fatigue
💬 Social isolation and withdrawing from conversations
❤️ Loneliness and reduced confidence
🧩 An increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia

The good news? Detecting hearing loss early and managing it appropriately can help you stay connected, active and engaged with the people and moments that matter most.

📊 Did you know?
• 1 in 3 adults in the UK has hearing loss – that’s over 18 million people.
• More than half of people aged 55+ have hearing loss.
• Nearly 80% of people over 70 are affected.
• Around 2.4 million adults have hearing loss severe enough to struggle with everyday conversations.
• Around 1 in 7 adults experience tinnitus – over 7 million people in the UK.
