As the new term begins, some young people feel excited, others feel nervous — both are valid responses.
For some, school can be an overwhelming environment, putting the nervous system on high alert well before prelims even begin.
As parents and caregivers, our role isn’t to eliminate that pressure, but to offer steady support: helping with structure, organisation, and a calm space to work.
Children learn in different ways, and there is no right or wrong approach — what matters is finding a balance that allows each child to feel safe, supported, and able to thrive, not just academically.
As a mum of two and a child and young person therapist I have witnessed many different takes on this stage and it really varies for so many young people.
Returning to school after a break is a big transition in itself without the added extra pressure of us adults saying “it’s time to get your head down - it’s an important year” and whilst this may be true our young people may see this as a threat and shut down, trying to work and support how we can help them find a way to explore these times is key.
What do they need? Can we break it down into stages rather than one big whole expectation as that feels huge right? Imagine how they must feel…
If you’re noticing your child struggling with this transition, reaching out for support can help and whilst most schools offer school counselling I do have some capacity in my diary for taking on CYP. Working with CYP is pretty special and I hope for all of them returning to school that they remember the magic and strength they all hold within.
With heart,
Julie 💛
