Threading is such a fun and motivating way to support children's development!

This activity is fantastic for developing bilateral coordination – the ability to use both hands together in a coordinated way.

Bilateral coordination is an important building block for many everyday skills, including dressing, using cutlery, handwriting, fastening buttons and managing zips.

Threading activities can also support:

Fine motor skills and hand strength
Hand-eye coordination
Motor planning skills
Concentration and attention
Problem-solving skills
Crossing the midline
Confidence and independence

One of my favourite things about Conductive Education is that we can support so many areas of development through play and meaningful activities.

Children are often far more motivated to learn when they're having fun!

This beautiful The Very Hungry Caterpillar threading set is part of one of my themed story bags, which I use to create engaging and motivating learning opportunities within sessions.
Learning through play really is powerful.

We had lots of fun today exploring my Farm Story Bag, with so many opportunities for learning, movement and play.

We explored the story Farmyard Hullabaloo, matching the pictures in the book to our farm animals and then matching the animals to picture cards.

The animals were hidden in a sensory tray filled with grass and straw, giving us opportunities to explore different textures while encouraging attention and interaction.

We also worked on movement skills throughout the session.

We completed jigsaw puzzles in sitting and over the peanut ball, practised high kneeling and explored purposeful movements through play.

We also practised activities in different positions, including side lying, sitting and high kneeling.

In side lying, we practised feeding the animals using pom poms, colouring and completing a farm animal puzzle.

We had lots of fun squeezing the pig to make the ball pop out while working in sitting.

There was so much learning happening through these simple, playful activities.

By using something a child is genuinely interested in, we can create meaningful opportunities to practise movement, positioning, coordination, attention, problem solving and independence.

We don't have to take the fun out of learning.

We can use play to help children practise the skills they need for everyday life.

Have a look at this superstar in action!

We had a busy session full of learning, movement and lots of opportunities to practise important skills.

Today we worked on throwing bean bags into a target while standing on the stairs, helping to develop balance, coordination, motor planning and controlled movement.

We also used our feet to put bean bags into the target, creating opportunities to practise purposeful leg and foot movements in a fun and motivating way.

We worked on balance and postural control while standing with one foot on the wobble cushion and reaching to place cogs onto the stick.

We explored blowing pieces of paper using our breath, both with and without straws, creating opportunities to practise breath control, oral motor skills and coordination.

We also worked on dressing skills while putting hoops and rings onto our body, helping to develop body awareness, coordination and independence with everyday tasks.

And we practised stepping in and out of therapy bands, working on weight shifting, balance, leg strength, motor planning and controlled movements.

So many different skills can be developed through playful, purposeful activities.

I love using activities that children enjoy and find motivating to create opportunities to practise the skills they need for everyday life.

Every activity has a purpose, and every small step is worth celebrating.

Well done, superstar. You worked so hard today and I am so proud of you.

So much learning can happen through play.

Have a look at this superstar in action last week.

During our Conductive Education session, we had lots of lovely opportunities to support his communication, interaction and learning through play.

He offered me pretend food during our play.

It might look like a simple little interaction, but there is so much happening here.

He was:

Communicating with me
Sharing an experience
Initiating an interaction
Using his imagination
Practising purposeful hand movements
Developing his social interaction
Learning through something that genuinely interested him

This is something I love about Conductive Education.

We don't have to choose between learning and having fun.

We can use what a child loves, what motivates them and what they are interested in to create meaningful opportunities to move, communicate, interact and learn.

Every child has their own strengths, interests and ways of communicating.

My job is to notice them, build on them and create opportunities for them to grow.

What looks like play can be a really important part of learning.

Have a look at this superstar practising their cutting skills.

We are practising so many skills, as cutting is a great activity for developing lots of different skills alongside the actual use of scissors.

We are working on:

Hand strength
Hand control
Bilateral coordination
Hand-eye coordination
Fine motor skills
Concentration
Visual attention
Motor planning
Following instructions
Independence

They have been working really hard with their cutting skills, and it's been fantastic seeing them bloom and flourish in this skill.

I love finding activities that are meaningful and motivating for each child, while creating opportunities to develop skills through play and learning.

Hiya! I'm Rachel!

I’m a specialist in movement and learning that empowers children and adults across Durham and the North East to reach their potential through Conductive Education and Portage. I believe everyone has the ability to learn, grow, and bloom.

I have been a qualified Conductor for over 10 years. But recently I have attended many courses to expand my knowledge including Portage and Makaton and I use the Portage principles and communication visuals in my sessions.

Conductive Education with Rachel supports adults and parents of children with additional needs looking for additional support outside of the NHS.

I provide additional support to support the development of gross and fine motor skills, social and communication skills plus also play skills.

My mission is to provide Conductive Education and Portage inspired sessions in a supportive learning environment to encourage active learning and build confidence in not just their skills but themselves. I believe everyone has the ability to learn and develop skills.

Have a look at this superstar in action today!

He did so well in his Conductive Education session today.

We had lots of lovely interactions and opportunities to support and develop his communication throughout the session.

He did some fantastic communicating using his communication board to ask for his phone because he wanted to show me Moana while we were matching Moana characters to pictures.

He also loved playing with the fruit and vegetables and using them to interact with me during our play.

We also worked on colour
sorting, threading and so much more.

Such a little superstar! I am so proud of them.
