Happy 78th birthday to the NHS! 🎂

This week our staff celebrated by sharing cake at our Culture of Care event , where we welcomed over 60 members of staff to learn about the Culture of Care national framework, hearing from experts by experience and how some of our inpatient units have been putting Culture of Care into practice.

"We're all products of the experiences that we've been through in our lives. Those things will have impacted on how they are as people and how they interact with others. Bearing that in mind is a really good first step."

Listen to Hear the Story, a podcast series that brings together the voices of colleagues and people with lived experience to explore how understanding people's stories can improve care.

Through the podcast, colleagues, people who use our services and those with lived experience share their perspectives on care, recovery and support. Their stories bring to life how small changes in the way we listen, communicate and respond can make a meaningful difference to people's experiences.

We're delighted to share that Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust's Core Needs project has been shortlisted in three categories at the Nursing Times Awards 2026: Children's Services, the Dame Elizabeth Anionwu Award for Inclusivity in Nursing and Midwifery, and Nursing in Mental Health.

Developed by our Neurodiversity team, Core Needs works in partnership with school SENDCOs across Hull and East Riding to provide quicker, needs-led support for children and young people with neurodiversity needs. By helping children access the right support within their school environment, the project is improving access to care, reducing inequalities and strengthening collaboration between health, education and partner organisations.

This latest recognition follows a recent shortlisting in the HSJ Patient Safety Awards and reflects the dedication, innovation and compassion of everyone involved in delivering the programme.

A huge congratulations to the Neurodiversity team and all our partners who continue to make a real difference to children, young people and families across our communities. 👏

Our patient, David has worked his way from being placed on a ventilator in intensive care to taking on two running challenges to raise money for our Trust charity, Health Stars.

David Gray was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disroder (BPD) in 2016, and will take part in the Great North Run and the Yorkshire Marathon to 'give back' to Trust that has supported his mental health recovery.

In August 2023, David had to stop running after an incident led to him being admitted to intensive care which took a toll on his body. Since then, he has been receiving support from the Trust’s Community Mental Health Team and was referred for Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and is now ready to start running again.
