Your connective tissues (so anything other than muscles (ie tendons, ligaments, fascia)) need slow and steady stress to become and stay strong as you age.

These connective tissues 'shrink-wrap' around habitual posture patterns. In Yin yoga you move your bones into shapes that you don't often hold in your daily life, and by relaxing and softening into these shapes, the deep tissues are targeted with gentle, deep, stress and lengthening.

Slow, sustained loading of these tissues, lengthens them more effectively than a quick stretch.

Also, if you are stressed you can forget how to relax. Yin yoga is like a reset for you as there is so much focus on consciously relaxing your muscles.

The most common answer to "Why don't you try yoga?" I have come across in all my years of teaching is definitely: "I can't do yoga, I am not flexible enough."

And you know what? I used to say the exact same thing!

But when I now stop and think about it, it's a bit like saying:

"I can't learn Italian because I don't speak Italian yet."

Most things in life are skills that help you develop something over time. We don't usually expect ourselves to be good at them before we begin, yet when it comes to yoga, many people assume they need to arrive already flexible.

Maybe this is a reflection of how we think in modern life. We are increasingly used to seeing polished end results rather than ordinary beginnings: social media, online content and also workplace culture reward performance and visible achievement.
We see people doing impressive things and forget that we all start somewhere.

The idea that we should already be competent before we are allowed to try makes starting anything new feel surprisingly uncomfortable.

So when someone says: "I'm not flexible enough for yoga," what they may mean is: "I don't think I'm good enough yet."

Flexibility isn't a requirement for yoga any more than fitness is a requirement for walking. In fact, the people who feel stiff, tight or inflexible are often the people who stand to gain the most from the amazing movement practice that is yoga.

So maybe the more interesting question is:
"When did I start believing I had to be good at something before I was allowed to begin?" 😉

Two much-loved Unwind formats are coming to Lympstone in a calm, small barn setting on the edge of Lympstone village.

1️⃣ Yoga for Complete Beginners
This is for anyone who is new to yoga, returns after a long break or is worried about not being flexible enough or too unfit to do yoga, or unsure about where and how to start.

Think: non-scary yoga for non-bendy people 🤍

2️⃣ The Pause Practice: Slow Stretch for Stiff Bodies & Tired Minds. This is a quiet, floor-based class for people who feel tight, tense, tired or mentally overloaded.

This class uses indulgent slow-stretches, long holds, supported poses and simple breathing to ease common areas of tension in the shoulders, hips, back, neck and jaw, whilst giving your mind a calm space to land and just be.

There is no need to be fit or any need to know what you're doing. You will be guided, you'll get options to adapt your practice and space to go at your own pace.

Planned for a September 2026 start:

Tuesday 10 AM - Yoga for Complete Beginners
Thursday 10 AM - Slow Stretch for Stiff Bodies & Tired Minds

I am gathering local interest now, and you can register your interest via link in the comments and DM for any questions 🤍

Movement doesn't always need to be hurried.

Yes, we need to keep strong and mobile, especially as we age.

In fact, since I've started (very gentle for now) strength training, my shoulder pain has finally, finally eased. I feel more solid in the centre of my body and gaining back balance and endurance. I have just added small weights and more dynamic movement to my rehab routine - small steps, but it's been two years and it's time to knock this de-conditioning on the head.

Back to the topic, though 😁 yes to strength and CV and mobility - and also yes to stillness and slow movement.

I always see it as ☯️ yin and yang: Yang is your movement, it's your muscles moving and body using strength. Yin is stillness, settling and softening. To be whole, you need both.

I read something interesting the other day. (my amazing Yin yoga teacher), said that 'Throughout the day, we repeatedly place our bodies into passive, relatively still positions and remain there for extended periods. I call this “everyday yin.” (...) Sitting for prolonged periods can lead to increased stiffness, discomfort, and a reduced tolerance for movement. The concern is not any one position, but that we stay too long in postures we repeat over and over again, with little variation. (...) Use your yin yoga practice to regain and maintain these other directions and depths. But, do not forget to also include your yang practices as well. Use those muscles and get your heart pumping too."

Our bodies and minds need both. Movement and flow, stillness and rest.

What are you giving your body more of? And what are you missing out?
