What Animals Teach Us About Human Behaviour

The natural world is full of remarkable behaviours that mirror aspects of our own psychology.

From attachment and trust to cooperation, memory, empathy and resilience, animal behaviour offers fascinating insights into the way our own minds and nervous systems work.

This series explores what science has discovered about animals - and how those discoveries can help us better understand ourselves.

What if you can’t leave?

Much of the online advice surrounding narcissistic or high-conflict relationships assumes that leaving, going no contact, or avoiding engagement is always possible.

For many people, it isn’t.

Not everyone can leave the relationship. Not everyone can leave the job. Not everyone can avoid engagement.

When engagement is unavoidable, the goal is not always to win the argument. Sometimes, it is simply to stay on track, maintain your reality, and keep your goal in sight.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to difficult relationships. Different situations require different responses.

💜 For those navigating narcissistic, high-conflict or difficult relationships when leaving isn’t possible.

Have you ever left an argument feeling confused, exhausted, or wondering how the conversation ended up back where it started?

Sometimes circular arguments are not really about resolution. They can become a subconscious way of managing difficult emotions such as shame, insecurity, fear, or the need for control.

Understanding the pattern can help you step out of the cycle, trust your own reality, and protect your emotional wellbeing.

💜 You do not have to participate in every conversation you are invited into.

When Is It Gaslighting - And When Is It Something Else?

The term gaslighting is widely used on social media, but not every disagreement, forgotten conversation, or difference in perspective is gaslighting.

Healthy relationships allow room for misunderstandings, different memories, and repair.

Gaslighting is usually not about one isolated incident. It is more often a persistent pattern that leaves you doubting your memory, judgement, or sense of reality.

If you have ever found yourself asking, “Am I imagining things?” or “Why don’t I trust myself anymore?”, this infographic may help you reflect on some important differences.

The opposite of coercion is not agreement, compliance, or obedience.

It is shared reality.

Healthy relationships allow two people to preserve their own minds whilst remaining connected.

We can disagree and still remain in relationship.

Disagreement is not rejection.

Correction is not betrayal.

Different perspectives are not punished.

A trauma bond is not the same as love.

When a relationship is characterised by repeated cycles of harm, confusion, threat to attachment, and reconciliation, yet the person remains psychologically and emotionally tied to it, a trauma bond is often involved.

Narcissistic dynamics frequently create the conditions in which these bonds can develop.

The body begins to attach not only to the person, but to the cycle itself.

That is why leaving can feel so difficult, even when the relationship is harmful.

The trauma bond does not simply break.

As safety, understanding, and new experiences emerge, it gradually becomes redundant. If this resonates with you you can read the full article in my link below.
