Moorland Immersion

Having spent a bit of time on Hadrians wall this year being a checkpoint Charlie, I decided it was time to explore it further.

I’ve also spent far too much time in my other job which doesn’t get me outside enough and boy, did I need a walk.

So with three days, I chose the best bits and walked from Heddon on the Wall to Newtown. Basically half the entire Hadrians wall walk but missing the boring 20 miles either side with very little wall on show - no offence Carlisle or Newcastle but I’m just not a city girl!

We set off in clag and ended in bright sunshine both inside and out!

What a glorious time to be on the moor with the sky filled with skylarks, curlew, golden plover, sandpiper and more. Whilst treading gently and mindfully we found the bishops stones and put the world to rights listening to the mournful cry of the plover (hoping to god it always sounds that miserable and their chicks hadn’t just become din dins for a bird that for the purposes of the tape shall remain nameless 🥴🤦‍♀️).

This walk has been on my bucket list for a while and with mind and body not behaving as well as they should this year it was just the tonic for a mindful solo wander to pop my Spring Gentian cherry!!

I also saw my first Ring Ouzel🎉 along with curlews, oystercatchers, meadow pipits, willow warblers, dippers, greylags, lapwings and sandpipers to name those that sung or lingered long enough 🥰

There’s just something about this walk that reminded me ‘there’s nowhere to go and nowhere to be’ - just to be where your feet are!!

Happy Star Wars day !

I just thought I’d remind you lovely lot about my podcast - Moor Chat. I had hoped to continue with women in business but so many of you are clearly hiding 👻 from me - it’s time to move on (unless you stop ignoring me and get in touch !!).

We had such a wholesome heritage walk yesterday thanks to The Hive at Nenthead. A lovely bunch of ladies willing to go off piste and explore some of the lesser known heritage of Nenthead. Some lovely connections were made and of course, flapjack fuelled!

Can anyone identify the skull in the last photo? Various theories have emerged but we’re not sure.

Great heritage walk out in the sunshine courtesy of The Hive at Nenthead and their National lottery funding.

Minimal boggage, maximum flapjack appreciation and many Curlews and Lapwings observed.

We also had the pleasure of a vole, deer, sunshine and skylarks 🥰 Twas lush!

Day 5 - Shap to Orton.

Tired legs made for a late start with the intention of camping in Orton but as the afternoon progressed my ankle had other plans and the day was called.

We’ve made it to the dales section and will return another day. Overuse injuries don’t need more use and I’d stopped enjoying the journey. The remaining 120 miles ish will be there another day as they say!!

Off to lick my wounds and enjoy a beer. 🍻
