Just some thoughts around therapy, and the things I’m reading on social media and my knee injury. A mash-up I hope will make sense.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

The ongoing quest for home is often ongoing because we cannot see what is right in front of us.

And how could we?
We are taught to look outward, to want more, to envy what we can’t have to fuel this consumeristic machine that kills where your eyes are trained not to see.

A system that profits from longing cannot afford for us to feel at home, because a body at home doesn’t need to seek safety further.

So be subversive, choose you and the people around you, choose to find home in the small things, in the mondane, in your limbs and tongue and lungs,m.

If we shifted our language so the body was spoken of like a landscape, we would notice more and judge less. We wouldn’t find narratives that override the body. We would understand our body as river valleys, slowly and steadily carved by flowing water.

If you listened to your body without adding any story on how and why or when it feels the way it does, what would you notice instead?

The world is showing you how to be in your body. Your body is showing you how to relate to the world. You go this!

Embodiment is a process and not a destination. And yes, embodiment is a goal, at least for me. My body is the place I go to to ask for direction. But embodiment is not always possible and that is ok. We cannot fully be in our bodies all the time.

1. We need to be able to balance outward focus and inward focus
2. Cognitive tasks and body attunement may not happen at the same time
3. Being embodied may not always be the best option
4. Embodiment happens in a multitude of ways

If you even look at the landscape of somatic practices, there is no one way to be in your body, no one theory, no one framework or understanding.

Let’s get there in ways that feel empowering and not with the same logic of control and manipulation that repeats patterns of oppression towards our bodies.

I love geeking out about the body, which is a first to me, thanks to the ever-inspiring anatomy-precise somatic classes with somatic educator Abigail Rose Clarke.

Why does it matter to me or to you to know about this system?

Because I find it beautiful to discover that a small part in our inner ear is responsible for our sense of safety and our capacity to be in relationship with the world.

Because we literally have within us an entire system that unceasingly works to ensure we are centred (balanced) and oriented.

Because the vestibular system is proof that even to be in relationship with the space and feel presence we don’t need grandiose movements: a simple tilt of the head to feel the pull of gravity is enough.

We hear a lot about somatic awareness, and it is sometimes in the shape of complicated movements and sequences or difficult experiences.

I like to think of somatic awareness as an opportunity to connect with parts of the body that in my day-to-day life may not be noticed with intention.

I’m aware that interoception, proprioception and kinesthesia may be words that mean nothing to most people, and ultimately, to feel into the body, we don’t need them. If you feel into your body, you feel into your body even without knowing if you don’t know the name of that specific type of awareness.

I’m sharing this because I believe it shows that somatic awareness is far more reachable than what we think. Somatic awareness is really about connecting to the everyday, the mondane, the gesture and movements we automatically do.

To be somatically aware, you don’t need tricks, you need focus and intention. Do I want to feel how my arm feels gravity when I lift it? Do I want to connect to my tongue when I slowly say words out loud?

In “A fielguide of getting lost”, Rebecca Solnit’s reflection on “the blue of distance” beautifully mirrors the essence of embodied presence, a practice of being with what is, without rushing to resolve or possess it.

In ecosomatic work, we cultivate this capacity to sense and stay present with longing, grief, or wonder as living expressions of our relationship with the more-than-human world.

I now can’t unsee how the horizon gets tinted with blue shades without feeling that familiar ache of longing as a reminder of all that is beyond reach yet deeply felt in my body.

I am reminded that connection with the more-than-human world is about inhabiting it with tenderness and awe, rather than ownership, completion or exploitation.

I’ll never stop saying it, we need more awe in our life.

Somatically, awe is one of the few states that naturally and effortlessly settles the body. It reminds you that you belong to a pattern larger than yourself, while also letting you feel that pattern moving through you. Awe lives in the body.

How beautiful is it to feel awe?

We often believe that tuning into the deeply knowing of the earth and the body is something out of our comprehension, a language that we cannot understand, a complicated syntax and vocabulary it costs energy and effort to master.

I don’t think the step to translate the land and the body into a language we can read and speak is necessarily easy or straightforward, especially in this age and time where distractions are everywhere and focus needs to be on production and accumulation. No, I can’t promise you that getting rid of that noise is even easy.

But once you finally get to tune in, oh my, you realise the simplicity of body-mind-earth connection, the clarity of that one path (and I’m not talking about directionality here), how everything then strips down to: “does my body agree?” And all of this while you know the earth got you for as long as you are there for the earth, a type of reciprocity we rarely get to enjoy these days.

I find this beautiful, and I hope you do, too.
