Today marks the start of Palliative Care Week so we're here to share what exactly is palliative care.

It may be thought that palliative care is only for people at the end of their lives. But this isn't always the case. You can have palliative care alongside cancer treatments that aim to help you live longer. Some treatments can control or reduce symptoms such as pain, nausea and loss of appetite. You may have palliative care at home, in a hospital, at a care home or in a hospice.

Finding out that you or a loved one is receiving palliative care treatment might bring up lots of different emotions. We're sending you a big hug. Please know our support services are here for you.

πŸ’š Palliative Care Week πŸ’š

This week is an opportunity to raise awareness of palliative care – what it is, who it can support, and why talking about our wishes for the future is so important.

Palliative care isn’t just about the final days of life. It is about helping people who are living with a serious or life-limiting illness to have the best possible quality of life.

It can include managing pain and other symptoms, as well as providing emotional, practical and psychological support for the person and those closest to them. It can be provided alongside other treatments and may begin much earlier than many people realise.

πŸ“‹ It’s also a good time to think about Advance Care Planning.

An Advance Care Plan (ACP) gives you the opportunity to talk about and record what matters to you and your wishes for your future care.

This might include:
❀️ What is most important to you
🏑 Where you would prefer to be cared for
🩺 Your wishes and preferences about treatment and care
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ Who you would like involved in decisions about your care
πŸ’¬ Anything you would want healthcare professionals and your family to know

These conversations can feel difficult, and it’s understandable that we sometimes put them off. But having an Advance Care Plan in place can give you a voice if there comes a time when you cannot express your wishes yourself. It can also give your family reassurance that they understand what you would have wanted.

You don’t need to wait until someone is approaching the end of their life to start the conversation.

πŸ’š Palliative care is about living as well as possible.
πŸ’š Advance Care Planning is about making sure your wishes are heard.

Talk to your GP or healthcare team if you would like to know more about palliative care or Advance Care Planning.
