Losing interest
When I feel myself losing interest, pulling away, going quiet, I no longer worry, I know the path back.
For I know I've spent too much time on things that leave me fragmented. Things that require passwords, logins, metrics, likes, tracking, notifications, optimisation argh.
I guided a Forest Bathing session the other day and watched an ant for about 30 minutes carry a very little twig across the earth. Nothing dramatic, just one small creature doing a creature thing. And a wakefulness rose in me, a presence, a love for everything around me.
It occurred to me that I usually teach Dharana (concentration) as discipline. It takes discipline to train the mind to focus. But what if it were less about discipline and effort and more about affection? Focusing our attention on one thing, without distraction is Loving what's here in front of us and leaves us in a state of union, connection, oneness, affectionate towards the world.
If you ever feel like you're losing interest, turn towards a relationship, person, your body, your breath, a project, art, food, the natural world, something real that you can touch, taste, smell and hold and devote yourself to it for however long you can and see that this is how we come back to wholeness.
