Alison Cannell

Alison Cannell ACA College of Supervisors & Registered Clinical PACFA member. I like to think I've learnt some strategies along the way that can be of support to my clients.

A compassionate, pragmatic and highly skilled Psychotherapist, Coach, Clinical Supervisor, Yoga Teacher and Facilitator, based on the Sunshine Coast and working both face to face and online. Welcome to my page and I trust we can spend some time here getting to know each other and sharing resources. Whilst I offer a whole range of services due to the breadth of my training, skills and experience, I

'll likely lean into this page most as a Psychotherapist/Counsellor, Supervisor (member of the ACA College of Supervision, and also love reflective practice supervision with Leaders and Coaches) and Trainer. From an individual client perspective, whilst I support a wide range of clients, if you're a woman who sometimes feels overwhelmed with the juggle of life, find yourself 'in your head,' overthinking things to the point where you just feel more stressed and 'always on,' then it could be worth us connecting. Many of my clients describe themselves in this way (as did I and on occasions still do!) and I've a huge passion for supporting them to navigate overwhelm and transition to more sustainable ways of being. My clients often find it a relief to explore and become more aware of their patterns of behaviour, particularly 'old' ways of being from family of origin and co-dependent patterns adopted. From there we can find our way to connect with the inner strength of the 'real you' and support you to feel more empowered. I've certainly seen my fair share of change and transition in life, through working overseas (yes I was a holiday rep in Europe in my 20's!), moving countries, changing careers, divorce and solo parenting ... whilst choosing to navigate many different career environments and pathways across both Corporate and Non Profit sectors. My most recent role before choosing to re-focus on my direct client work, was managing state-wide Operations for Lifeline Crisis Support in QLD, with around 500 staff and volunteers across 10 centres. I have a vast experience over 30 + years of working with a wide range of individuals and groups in many settings ... from corporate, to non-profit to individuals seeking personal support with life challenges. I'm originally from the North of England and have lived in Australia for over 20 years, these days on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Queensland with my son. My individual work is primarily online, with clients throughout Australia and overseas. I travel to deliver a range of training programs, including ASIST Suicide First Aid and 'Real Conversations' - supporting teams and organisations to talk about what's really going on!

I so love this reminder🙏
It can be easy to get lost in the potentially anxiety provoking aspects of the world .. coming back to self, being present to how we are, to what’s within our control right now, can often be a more easeful placeđŸ„°

A few thoughts on how yoga may support with stress, anxiety, low mood and general ‘un-ease.’
Complete with some background plane noise as a good practice in my not letting a perfectionist part of me rule the show!😜
Link to website for Yoga for Anxiety and Depression (Mudjimba Hall on a Wednesday evening) or Psychotherapy bookings is in the comments🙏💕

It’s always lovely to be able to offer programs on home territory in the Sunshine Coast. This week it’s ASIST Su***de First Aid training .. so critical in our communities to have Su***de First Aid helpers who can support people to ‘stay safe for now’ whilst connecting with further support.

5 women and 2 children have been murdered in the last 6 days, whilst this beautiful group of workers were spending 2 days with us on Lifeline’s DV -Alert program in Kingscliff. It hurts my heart and angers me that this is the way it is in our country, and the world. At least this group of wonderful humans will be doing their bit to make a difference .. being more aware of signs of DFV in both a work and community context, knowing how to respond, talking to their families, communities and colleagues about what healthy masculinity looks like. And they do this in a system woefully under resourced to support them and the women that need help.

'Yoga for Anxiety and Depression' classes start at Mudjimba Hall on a casual drop in basis next Wednesday 13th May, to open up to more people that would find this supportive. Booking is essential.

Classes are 5:45pm - 7pm on most Wednesday evenings: gentle yoga, beginner friendly, and a focus on how the practice of our yoga - our shapes, our breathing, our awareness of our mind, may support us at times when we're feeling stressed, overwhelmed or in flat mood.

I'm a long time Psychotherapist as well as Yoga Teacher and love offering these classes as I know the difference this practice has made in my life and the lives of my clients.

In the words of a recent class participant - "This 6 week program was a wonderful journey. Alison was very calming, supportive and knowledgeable about linking yoga to your mental health and how to calm the inner voice. I highly recommend this program to anyone." - CB

Im fortunate to be in India at present and managed to catch this little cat doing ‘Downward Dog’ pose. How wise is this cat to access all the benefits that this pose can bring, including:
- Encouraging deep, mindful breathing that supports our nervous system to relax
- Increasing blood flow to the brain, which may help relieve symptoms of mild depression and mental fogginess
- Relieving tension in neck, shoulders and back where stress is often held

If you’re curious to explore how a weaving of psycho-education, yoga philosophy and gentle yoga practices, the early bird for my 6 week ‘Yoga for Anxiety and Depression’ program is available until February 17th.

We start on 18th March at Mudjimba Hall and details and booking page is https://www.alisoncannell.com/yoga-for-anxiety-depression
