Judging by the feedback afterwards, I think we can safely say the terrarium workshops are becoming a bit of a favourite. 🥰

There was chatting, laughing, helping one another, wandering around choosing things, taking our time and my very popular weighted sloth decided to join us too. 🦥

What I really loved, though, was that nobody seemed in any great rush to leave once the workshop had finished.

People settled into The Nest, spent time in The Den, had photographs taken, sat around, chatted and just stayed in the space for a while. It felt like everybody had found themselves in that really lovely, calm little pocket of time where there was no need to rush off to the next thing.

And then somehow we all ended up back at the café together afterwards, carrying that same feeling with us and spending even more time together there. 💚

I don’t think anybody was quite ready to step out of it.

That’s Jen’s Den.
You can come with somebody. You can come on your own. You can be chatty. You can be quiet. You can spend ages deciding where one tiny piece of moss needs to go. You can finish your workshop and then simply sit for a while.
There really isn’t a right way to be here.

🌿 A little terrarium note from today…

You might notice in some of the photos that our finished terrariums have quite a bit of condensation on the inside of the glass. With all the wet weather we’ve had, the clay balls we used today were already holding quite a bit of moisture, and once they went into the jars, that moisture naturally started to evaporate and collect on the cooler glass. 💧

Nothing to worry about at all. I’ve explained to everyone who came today that the lids just need to stay off for the next couple of days, allowing some of that excess moisture to escape. Once things have settled and the glass is no longer heavily misted, the lids can go back on and our little closed ecosystems can begin doing their thing. 🌱

Actually, it’s quite a lovely little bit of terrarium science happening right in front of us, water evaporating, condensing on the glass and eventually making its way back down into the terrarium.

little weather update for this morning’s Terrarium Workshop! 🌿

Well… the British weather is doing its thing this morning and it is currently absolutely chucking it down! 🌧️

I’m still very much hoping to go ahead with today’s workshop. I don’t mind getting wet setting everything up, but there are some parts of the setup that I simply can’t get ready while it’s raining like this so unfortunately I don’t think we’re going to be ready for our planned 10am start.

Even the weather apps can’t agree with each other some are telling me it’ll stop around 10am, others are saying 11am… so your guess is as good as mine! ☔

My plan at the moment is to wait for the rain to ease, give myself enough time to get everything properly set up, and then hopefully still go ahead a little later this morning. 🌿

I’ll tag everyone who is due to come today and, as soon as I know what’s happening, I’ll pop you a message with an updated start time. If you’re still able to come then, wonderful and if the change of time means you can’t, that’s absolutely fine too. 💚

By jove we managed to swerve the rain!

The first wave of our Terrarium gardens took place today!

Lucie Alex thankyou for bringing your lovely family and friends all the way from Lincoln!

Thankyou Mother Nature for keeping me dry whilst I prepped and between 10AM and 12PM.... Literally!

🌿 Terrarium worlds don’t have to cost the earth 🌿

Everything is set up ready for a lovely family joining me at Jen’s Den this morning, and today we’re going to be experimenting a little.

One of the things I really want to show through these workshops is that creating a beautiful terrarium doesn’t have to cost £70.

There are some absolutely gorgeous terrarium kits and materials out there, and if that’s what you want to spend, brilliant. But I’m really interested in finding ways to make things like this accessible to more people.

So this morning we’ll be using a mixture of clay balls and horticultural grit and looking at how we can get the drainage our little terrarium worlds need without always having to buy the more expensive option.

Because affordable doesn’t have to mean less beautiful. 🌱

And receiving £5,000 from the Community Roots Fund gives me the breathing space to keep experimenting, buying plants and materials, and finding ways of making these experiences accessible without constantly worrying about where the next pennies are coming from.

Now I just need the weather to cooperate! 😂🤞

JEN'S DEN GETS TO KEEP GOING 🌿
I got the funding.
£5,000. 💚

And I've had to remind myself a few times that this was actually why I went to the East Marsh Community Roots Fund event in the first place. 😂
Because, the funding wasn't what I came away thinking about.
I came away thinking about people.
The other stallholders. The conversations. Hearing about what other people are trying to create in their communities. Everybody willing each other on. There was no feeling of I hope I get it and you don't.

It felt like a room full of people saying keep going to one another.

And then on Tuesday morning I opened an email telling me that my application had been successful.

Jen's Den Nature Retreat has been awarded £5,000 from the East Marsh Community Roots Fund. 🌱
And THAT is when the enormity of what this money actually means started sinking in.

It means continuation, the relationships that have been growing here don't have to suddenly stop because summer has finished.

It means that when the leaves start falling, the rain arrives and sitting outside at Jen's Den becomes considerably less appealing 😂, we can move.

Through the colder months, Jen's Den will continue from the Treehouse Cafe & Ices Weelsby Woods community room
We'll still plant, still make, still get our hands in soil.
We'll still learn about plants and little ecosystems and propagation and all the wonderful ways we can bring greenery into our homes.

We'll still talk, still connect.
We'll still have somewhere to come. 💚
That's the bit that means the most to me.
Nature doesn't stop being important because summer has finished. And neither do people.
So we move with the seasons.

🌱 Summer at Jen's Den.
🍂 Into autumn.
🌲 Through winter at the Treehouse.
🌷 And when spring comes around, we'll wander back up the hill, open the gate again and begin another season.

This £5,000 hasn't simply funded some workshops.
It's helped create a bridge from one season to the next.

And for some of the people who've found Jen's Den and need this little community for all sorts of different reasons, that continuity really matters.
Thank you to East Marsh United,to everyone involved in creating the Community Roots Fund, and to every single person who came along, listened, talked, supported and voted.

And thank you for believing that this funny little place tucked alongside the woods is worth investing in.

The gate isn't closing for winter after all. 🌿💚
We're just moving down the hill for a little while.

🌱 PROPAGATION DAY AT JEN’S DEN! 🌱
Before the rain!!

Today I’ve been getting my hands well and truly mucky and giving some of our succulents a little bit of love.

And THIS is one of my favourite things about succulents… they just keep on giving. 💚

One established plant can become two, three, four or sometimes a whole little family of new plants.

My mumsy Christine Pitts and I been carefully separating rooted babies, dividing established plants, taking stem cuttings and discovering tiny new rosettes growing from individual leaves. Some of them have already done half the work themselves, roots and all! 🌱

There’s something quite magical about seeing a tiny new plant growing from what looks like a single fallen leaf.

And for Jen’s Den, propagation makes so much sense.

Rather than continually buying new plants, I can nurture what we already have, grow our own little succulent nursery and eventually use those new plants in future workshops and sessions. 🪴

Less waste, more growing

More plants to share with our community.

And, quite frankly, any excuse for me to spend several hours surrounded by soil and plants is absolutely fine by me. 😂🌱

Nature really is very clever.
