Sometimes you don’t need to say anything at all.

A hand to hold.
A gentle massage.
A kiss on the forehead.
A reassuring touch from someone you trust.

Feeling connected and supported can help you feel safe and relaxed and create an environment where oxytocin can flow. ✨

And remember, touch is personal. Some people love massage during labour, while others don’t want to be touched at all. Both are completely okay.

Talk to your birth partner about what feels comforting to you before labour begins.

📍 Today’s takeaway: It’s not about the “right” touch. It’s about what makes you feel safe.

The Oxytocin Series | Entry #4: Don’t Forget to Laugh 🤍

When we think about preparing for birth, we often picture breathing techniques, birth plans and hospital bags.

But what about laughter?

A genuine laugh can help you feel more relaxed, more connected and more at ease. Those are all feelings that support the release of oxytocin which is the hormone that plays such an important role during labour.

That doesn’t mean you need to force a smile through every contraction or pretend everything is funny. Labour is hard work, and it’s okay to experience a whole range of emotions.

But in the early stages of labour, or in between surges, sharing a laugh with your birth partner, watching a favourite comedy, reminiscing about a funny memory or simply allowing yourselves to be playful can help create an environment where calm and connection can flourish.

Birth doesn’t have to be silent and serious to be powerful.

Sometimes the most supportive thing your birth partner can do isn’t reminding you to breathe… it’s making you laugh.

📍Today’s takeaway: Your birth space doesn’t just need to feel calm, it can also be filled with joy. After all, what is more joyous than meeting your baby for the first time?

The Oxytocin Series | Entry #3: Why Privacy Matters 🤍

Imagine trying to fall asleep while someone stood at the end of your bed, watching you.

Not the ideal environment really, is it?

Labour isn’t the same as sleep, but there is a similarity: both rely on your body feeling safe enough to let go.

When we feel observed, interrupted or under pressure, our brain may release more adrenaline, the hormone that prepares us for action. While adrenaline has an important role, particularly as birth approaches, it can often make it harder to relax during labour.

That’s why many people find it helpful to create a birth environment that feels private and protected.

✨ Dim the lights.
✨ Limit unnecessary interruptions where possible.
✨ Surround yourself with people who help you feel safe.
✨ Create a space where you can focus inward.

Creating this space will help you let your guard down and enable your body to feel secure enough to do what it already knows how to do.

🤍 Today’s takeaway: Your environment speaks to your nervous system before anyone else does.

The Oxytocin Series | Entry #2: The Language of Birth 🤍

Have you ever noticed how different words make you feel?

Imagine someone says:
“Birth is going to be agony.”

Now compare that with:
“Labour will be intense, but your body is designed to work through each surge.”

The event hasn’t changed but your brain’s response has.

Our brains are constantly scanning for signs of safety or danger. When we hear frightening language, it can trigger a stress response, making adrenaline more likely to take centre stage.

Supportive, reassuring language can help us feel calmer and safer. While words alone won’t determine how labour unfolds, they can influence our mindset and the environment we’re creating for birth.

That’s one of the reasons hypnobirthing pays so much attention to language. I will never pretend labour is easy or avoid honest conversations. It’s about choosing words that inform without creating unnecessary fear.

So as you prepare for birth, notice the words you’re surrounding yourself with. They matter more than you might think.

The Oxytocin Series: Part 1 – Environment 🤍

Oxytocin is often called the love hormone, but during labour it’s also one of the hormones that helps your uterus contract effectively.

The interesting part? Oxytocin thrives when you feel safe, calm and undisturbed.

Think about the atmosphere you naturally relax in:
✨ Soft lighting
✨ Familiar voices
✨ Warmth
✨ Privacy
✨ Music that makes you feel calm

These small details help your brain recognise that you’re in a safe environment, allowing your body to release oxytocin more easily.

As you prepare for birth, don’t just think about where you’ll give birth. Think about how you want that space to feel. I offer a birth preparation session that helps you get your ideal plan down on paper so when the big day come, you are ready ❤️

Next week, we’ll explore another surprising way to encourage your body’s natural oxytocin production…

Hypnosis isn’t about losing control or being put to sleep. It’s simply a state of deep relaxation and focused attention, a bit like when you’re completely absorbed in a good book or the moment before you fall asleep.

When we’re deeply relaxed, the conscious, analytical part of the mind becomes quieter, allowing us to access the subconscious mind more easily. This is where many of our beliefs, expectations and automatic responses are stored.

Through guided relaxation and carefully chosen language, we can begin to replace unhelpful beliefs about birth with more positive, realistic and empowering ones. Rather than expecting fear and tension, your mind starts to associate birth with calm, confidence and trust in your body.

The goal isn’t to convince you that birth will be easy or perfect, but to help you approach it feeling informed, prepared and capable.

On my 1:1 course, we cover a lot of topics from how your body does its things during labour to how your birth partner can help! Every session ends with a relaxation hypnosis, where your subconscious mind is able to reframe birth expectations.
