Why do some people just look brilliant in glasses?

You know those people. Their eyewear looks like it belongs on their face. Not an afterthought. Not something they have to wear. It somehow makes them look better.

Here's the interesting bit. It's probably not because they have a particularly glasses-friendly face. It's because they've found the right glasses.

And there's quite a lot going on when that happens.

Face shape rules are a starting point at best. Round face, choose something square. Square face, choose something round. We'd take those with a fairly substantial pinch of salt. Two people with similar face shapes can look completely different in the same frame. That's because we're looking at far more than face shape. Your eyes, eyebrows, the width of your face, your nose and bridge, your colouring, your hair, where a frame sits on your cheeks. And then something harder to measure. You. Your personality, your clothes, your job and how you actually want to look.

Your eyebrows matter more than you might think. A great frame often works with the natural lines of your face. Get the relationship between the frame and your eyebrow line right and everything looks wonderfully balanced. Get it wrong and even a beautiful frame can look odd. You may not consciously notice it. You just know one pair looks better.

Colour can completely change a face. Black isn't automatically flattering. Neither is tortoiseshell. The right colour can bring out your eyes, warm your complexion and make your whole face appear brighter. The wrong one can drain you. Sometimes we put a colour on somebody they'd never have picked up themselves. Then they look in the mirror. Oh. Those are good moments.

The safest pair isn't necessarily the best pair. Most of us gravitate towards what feels familiar. So if you've worn small brown rectangular glasses for ten years, there's a decent chance you'll start looking for small brown rectangular glasses. Just slightly newer ones. Sometimes the frame that makes someone look fantastic is three feet away and they haven't even considered it.

The best compliment isn't "I love your glasses." It's "you look fantastic." Great eyewear shouldn't feel like fancy dress. It should feel like you, perhaps just a slightly more interesting, confident, stylish version.

So if you've ever thought "I wish I was one of those people who really suited glasses" β€” you probably are. You just haven't found the right ones yet.

Some eyewear likes to shout. Hoffmann prefers a raised eyebrow.

Handcrafted in Germany for more than 40 years, these are frames for people who appreciate the finer things. Exceptional craftsmanship, beautiful materials and design that doesn't need a giant logo to prove a point.

And then there's Hoffmann Natural Eyewear.

Nature isn't just the inspiration here. It's quite literally part of the story.

Our favourite? The natural horn frames, individually crafted from Asian water buffalo horn. The horn is only sourced after the animal's natural demise, and even the shavings created during the making process can be returned to the earth as natural fertiliser. Clever. Considered. And rather beautiful.

No two pieces of natural horn are exactly alike, which means every finished frame has a character all of its own.

No giant logos. In fact, no logo needed at all. Because when something is this beautifully made, it doesn't need to tell everyone who made it.

Sometimes the best eyewear gets noticed for all the right reasons.

"Where did you get those?" Not "what brand are those?"

If Hoffmann sounds a bit like you, come and discover the collection at Bottomley's. We'll make the coffee, sit you down and help you find the ones that look like they were made for your face.

You might not know you're an Eyewear Stylist yet.

You might work in fashion. Beauty. Hospitality. Retail. Interiors. You might already work in optics. Or you might be doing something completely different.

What matters to us is that you're brilliant with people. You notice the little things. You can tell when somebody needs a bit of confidence and when they need an honest opinion. You have a natural eye for what looks good. You enjoy getting to know people rather than simply serving them. And you genuinely care whether somebody walks away thinking "I absolutely love these."

If that sounds like you, we'd really like to meet you.

We're looking for an Eyewear Stylist to join us full-time at Bottomley Opticians in Halifax.

Our appointments aren't rushed. We sit down with people, get to know them and help them find eyewear that feels completely right for them. Sometimes that means encouraging someone to try something they'd never have picked themselves. Sometimes it means saying "no, that one isn't you." And sometimes you get that brilliant moment when someone looks in the mirror and you can see immediately that they know they've found the pair.

That's the bit we love.

You don't need optical experience. We can teach you about lenses, measurements, fitting and adjustments. It's much harder to teach warmth, curiosity, style and a genuine desire to look after people properly. So that's what we're looking for.

Full-time, Tuesday to Saturday, based in Halifax. Salary depends on experience with full training and ongoing development.

If you've read this and thought "actually, that sounds like me" β€” please get in touch. Send us your CV and, much more importantly, tell us a little about yourself and why you'd be brilliant at this.

National Relaxation Day. 😌

Apparently today is National Relaxation Day. Which sounds like an excellent excuse to do absolutely nothing.

But it also got us thinking about something we've always tried very hard to get right at Bottomley's.

Coming to an opticians shouldn't feel stressful. You shouldn't feel rushed through an eye test. You shouldn't feel awkward trying on glasses while somebody hovers over you. You shouldn't have to make a decision in three minutes because there's someone waiting behind you. And you definitely shouldn't feel pressured into buying something you're not completely happy with.

We like things a little more relaxed than that.

Come in. Sit down. Have a coffee. We'll talk to you properly. Your eye examination gets the time it needs. And when it comes to choosing glasses, we'll bring frames to you, try things you might never have considered and give you an opinion.

Sometimes we'll tell you a frame looks brilliant. Sometimes we'll tell you it really doesn't. πŸ˜‚

No rush. No pressure. Because choosing something that's going to sit in the middle of your face every day probably deserves a little more thought than we sometimes give it.

So in honour of National Relaxation Day, put your feet up if you can. ....And if you ever come to see us, you can relax too. We've got you.

It's World Lizard Day. 🦎

And, being opticians, we obviously ended up looking at their eyes.

Which, it turns out, are absolutely incredible.

Take the chameleon. Its eyes can move independently of each other, so it can be looking in two different directions at once. When it spots something interesting, both eyes lock onto the same target to judge distance accurately.

Then there are geckos. Some nocturnal geckos have extraordinary low-light vision and can even distinguish colours in conditions where human eyes struggle to see much at all.

And we think our eyes are clever.

The truth is, they are. Your eyes are constantly adjusting focus, adapting to different light levels, judging distance, detecting colour and sending an enormous amount of information back to your brain. Mostly without you giving any of it a second thought.

Until something changes.

Maybe the menu gets held a little further away. Night driving isn't quite as comfortable. Your laptop seems to be making your eyes tired. Or you find yourself reaching for your glasses more often than you used to.

Eyes are remarkable things.

Lizard eyes are just slightly weirder. πŸ¦ŽπŸ˜‚

Happy World Lizard Day. Here's to looking after the two eyes you've got.

Your eyes don't know you're at work.

They don't know you're answering emails. Or reading spreadsheets. Or switching between your laptop, your phone and the person sat opposite you.

They only know one thing. They've been asked to constantly change focus. Over and over again.

Most people assume that feeling tired, rubbing their eyes or getting a headache is just part of modern life. Sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it's simply because one pair of glasses is trying to do five different jobs.

Distance. Computer. Phone. Paperwork. Meetings.

The right glasses don't just help you see more clearly. They make the whole day feel easier.

And once you've experienced that, it's surprisingly difficult to go back.

When did you last update your glasses β€” and when did you last update yourself?

Most of us change a lot over five years. Our style evolves, our confidence grows, the way we present ourselves to the world shifts in ways that are sometimes dramatic and sometimes so gradual we barely notice.

And yet the glasses on our face β€” often the most prominent accessory we wear every single day β€” can stay exactly the same for a decade or more.

It's not vanity to want frames that reflect who you are now. It's actually quite sensible.

At Bottomley's we see it all the time. Someone comes in after years in the same frames, tries something different with the help of a styling consultant, and gets that slightly startled look of recognition β€” oh, that's what I actually look like now.

It doesn't have to be dramatic. Sometimes it's a subtle shift in shape, a different colour, a lighter frame. But the right update at the right time can make a genuine difference to how you feel.

If your glasses feel more like a habit than a choice, it might be time for a conversation.

Happy Yorkshire Day. 🀍

Proud to be Yorkshire born and bred.

Yes, we're careful with our money. But what really defines us is this. We're friendly, we tell you the truth and we'll always stop for a chat.

At Bottomley's we're lucky to spend our days looking after people from all over this brilliant county. Some have been coming for generations. Others found us last week.

Not from Yorkshire? You're just as welcome. We'll probably convince you it's the best place in the country before you leave.

Have a wonderful Yorkshire Day, wherever you're celebrating.

"I never thought I'd suit those."

It's probably the sentence we hear most often. "I'd never have picked these..." followed very quickly by "but I absolutely love them."

And I completely understand why.

Left to our own devices, most of us play it safe. We choose what we've always chosen. The same shape, the same colour, the same style. The glasses become a habit rather than a decision.

But the glasses you instinctively reach for aren't always the ones that suit you best. They're often just the ones that feel safest. That's human nature. We all do it. The jumper in the same colour. The same haircut. The same side of the restaurant menu. We naturally gravitate towards what's familiar. But familiar isn't always flattering. Or exciting. Or the best version of you.

One of the nicest parts of our job is gently encouraging someone to try something they would normally walk straight past. Not because it's expensive. Not because it's fashionable. But because we can already picture how good it's going to look.

Then comes the moment we love. They look in the mirror. There's a pause. A smile. And then "I never thought I'd suit those."

That isn't luck. It's what happens when somebody takes the time to understand your face, your colouring, your personality and the impression you want to make.

Nobody ever says "I wish I'd stayed with my old glasses." What they usually say is "I can't believe I've been wearing the wrong style for so long."

Get them right and people won't remember your glasses. They'll remember you.

What if you've simply got used to it?

It's amazing what we can get used to. The squeaky floorboard. The drawer that sticks. The car that pulls slightly to the left. After a while, you stop noticing. Until someone points it out.

Glasses are exactly the same.

We meet people every week who've quietly adapted to things they no longer question. They push their glasses back up every few minutes. They take them off to read. They avoid driving at night. They turn their head instead of moving their eyes. They've accepted that reading menus in dimly lit restaurants is just one of those things. They assume headaches after a day at the computer are normal.

And perhaps the saddest one of all, they've convinced themselves that glasses just don't suit them.

Most people don't complain. Because they don't realise there's another way. If something happens gradually, we adapt. We don't wake up one morning and think these glasses are terrible. It happens so slowly that yesterday feels exactly the same as today.

Until someone asks a different question.

Not "can you read the bottom line?" but "what are you putting up with?"

That's a very different conversation.

Sometimes the answer is nothing, everything's great. Brilliant. That's exactly what we hope to hear.

But every so often someone mentions something they've been living with for years. Something they've never thought to bring up. A few questions later they realise it isn't something they have to put up with after all.

Those are our favourite consultations. Not because someone buys new glasses. Because somebody walks away thinking "I wish I'd done this years ago."

Don't assume that because you've got used to something, it's normal. Sometimes you've simply become very good at adapting. And sometimes all it takes is the right conversation to discover life could have been a little easier all along.
