They’re not.

A birth plan is a tool for communicating your preferences with the people caring for you.

Birth preparation is the process of understanding your options, learning about birth, exploring pain relief choices, considering possible interventions, and thinking about what matters most to you.

One is something you share.

One is something you do for yourself.

And while they’re different, they work best together.

A birth plan without preparation can feel like a checklist.

Preparation without communication can leave others guessing what matters to you.

The strongest foundation for birth is having both.

You choose the venue, the dress, the music, the people you want by your side, and how you want the day to feel.

So why approach birth any differently?

A birth plan isn’t about controlling every outcome. It’s a useful tool that can help you prepare for birth.

Creating a birth plan encourages you to explore your options, learn about pain relief, understand the benefits and risks of different interventions, consider your preferences for labour and birth, and think about what matters to you after your baby arrives.

It’s not about predicting exactly what will happen. It’s about becoming informed, feeling involved, and communicating what matters most to you.

Because birth is one of the most significant days of your life and you deserve to prepare for it with intention, care, and confidence.

We rarely book a holiday without making a plan.

We think about where we’re going, how we’ll get there, where we’ll stay, and what we’ll do if things don’t go quite as expected.

Yet many people approach birth without ever exploring their options or understanding the different paths birth might take.

A birth plan isn’t about controlling every aspect of labour and birth. It’s about understanding your choices, considering your preferences, and thinking about your Plan A, Plan B and Plan C.

Because if you’ve never had the opportunity to consider your options before labour begins, you may find yourself making decisions you’ve never thought about before or agreeing to things you’re later unhappy with.

Planning doesn’t guarantee the birth you want.

But being prepared can help you feel more informed, more involved, and more positive about the birth you do have.

So much focus is placed on preparing for your baby’s arrival, but it’s important to prepare yourself for birth too.

Pregnancy hormones often get blamed for everything from mood swings to food cravings, but they’re doing far more than influencing how you feel.

Throughout pregnancy, the placenta produces huge amounts of hormones that help support your baby’s growth and prepare your body for birth and feeding. These hormones increase blood flow, support the growth of your uterus and breasts, and contribute to many of the changes you experience during pregnancy.

After birth, when the placenta is delivered, those hormone levels drop dramatically. In fact, it is one of the biggest hormonal shifts the human body experiences.

For many women, this can contribute to mood changes, night sweats, tearfulness and the emotional rollercoaster of the early postpartum days.

Understanding what’s happening inside your body doesn’t make every symptom easier, but it can be reassuring to know that there are real physiological changes behind what you’re experiencing.

Your body isn’t just growing a baby. It’s constantly adapting to support pregnancy, birth and life beyond it.

Reaching 40 weeks can suddenly come with pressure.

More appointments. More conversations about induction. More language around being “late” or “overdue.”

And while these discussions can absolutely be important, they can also leave women feeling like their body has failed simply because labour hasn’t started yet.

But pregnancy doesn’t suddenly become abnormal at 40 weeks.
Your body and your baby are still continuing the complex process of preparing for birth 🤍

Due dates are estimates, not expiry dates.
And for many women, some of the biggest changes in preparation for labour are happening long before labour officially begins.

You deserve balanced information, support, and the space to make informed decisions without fear or pressure.

This service looks to meet the whole picture of needs that have been missed by maternity services for black women. It’s great that there is more awareness of the stigma, trauma and loss being experienced and that services are addressing this.

Paths have launched an exciting year long project focusing on black maternal mental health 💜

This project aims to ensure Black women know about their services, improve awareness, break stigma and specifically support women with birth trauma and baby loss.

“Only 2cm.”

I still remember how defeated I felt hearing those words after labouring all day.

A few hours later, I was told I was “only” 3cm.

Even though I understood that cervical checks don’t predict how long labour will last, hearing those numbers still felt emotionally difficult in the moment.

And I think that’s important to say too 🤍

But shortly after that, I got into the birth pool… and my daughter was born within a couple of hours.

It took me around 20 hours to get to 3cm, and around 3 hours to go from 3cm to fully dilated and meeting my baby.

This is why cervical checks can sometimes feel emotionally difficult.

They can tell us what the cervix is doing in that moment, but they cannot tell us how much longer labour will be, when your baby will arrive, or how quickly things may change.

Labour progression is not always linear ✨

Every woman and every birth is different.

Birth isn’t about getting everything “perfect.” It’s about feeling supported, informed, and able to keep going, even when things feel intense 🤍
