The theme for the 12th International Day of Yoga in 2026 is 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing'. This theme focuses on preserving our physical and emotional states as longevity increases, so we can remain active. This got me thinking about one of the most powerful tools we have for our long-term wellness: active flexibility.
We often think of flexibility as just seeing how far we can passively stretch into a shape. But active flexibility is completely different. It is about using your own muscular strength to hold and control your end ranges of motion, rather than relying on your hands, straps, or gravity to pull you there.
Why does this matter for our long-term resilience?
Enhances Mobility and Balance: Yoga practices, including those that build flexibility, improve our overall mobility and balance, which become more and more important during the process of ageing.
Builds Joint Stability: It builds deep, stabilizing strength around our joints, which is a key factor in injury prevention.
Maintains Independence: With regular practice, we can maintain the mobility needed to avoid difficulties with walking and moving in our day-to-day lives.
Yoga isn't just about making shapes; it is about building a capable, resilient body that supports you for a lifetime.
If you are looking to build usable strength, create more space in your body, and invest in your long-term mobility, we would love to welcome you to the mat at Yoga Studio Sattva in Waterlooville. 🌿
