“You’re just lazy.”
Three words.
But words like these can cut deeper than people realise.
I still remember how upset I was when I received my first hateful comment about my weight.
And honestly? It wasn’t the last.
But I’ve learned something important:
Someone else’s opinion does not define your worth.
Because behind the stigma around obesity are years of messages telling people:
You don’t exercise enough.
You eat too much.
You lack willpower.
You’re simply not trying hard enough
We’re often told weight loss is as simple as:
“Eat less. Move more.”
But if it were really that simple, would so many people still be struggling?
When I speak to my clients, I hear the same things again and again:
“I’ve tried every diet.”
“I’ve joined gyms.”
“I’ve followed programmes.”
“I’ve lost weight before — and gained it back.”
“I don’t know what else to try.”
People don’t choose to live with obesity.
And many have already spent years trying to change it.
Obesity is a disease. It deserves understanding, compassion and appropriate treatment — not judgement.
And asking for help?
That is NOT the easy way out.
It can be one of the bravest things you ever do.
Because asking for help means saying:
My health matters.
My wellbeing matters.
My future matters.
I matter
So if you’re struggling with obesity, please hear this:
You are not lazy.
You are not a failure.
You are not alone.
And asking for support isn’t giving up.
It’s taking care of yourself.
