Somatic Yoga for Beginners | Part 3: Do You Have to Close Your Eyes?

There can be an assumption that to relax, practise yoga or connect with your body, you need to close your eyes.

But for some people, closing their eyes doesn’t feel relaxing at all. It might feel uncomfortable, vulnerable or even overwhelming.

In somatic yoga, there is always choice. ✨

Closing your eyes can sometimes help bring your attention inwards and support a sense of grounding. There may be moments during movement, or when lying down towards the middle or end of a practice, where closing your eyes feels right for you.

But keeping your eyes open is just as valid.

You might soften your gaze, look towards the ceiling, allow your eyes to move around the room or gently move your head. You may even notice that this feels more supportive for your system in that moment.

The invitation is to notice the effect rather than deciding there is a "right" way to practise.

Eyes open. Eyes closed. Moving. Fidgeting. Being still.

Somatic yoga is about having choices and discovering what feels supportive for your body.

Save this for your next practice, and remember: you get to meet your body your way. ✨

Embodiment for Beginners | Part 3: Noticing & Allowing 🌿

Embodiment isn’t something we practise to escape our humanness.

It’s not about getting rid of uncomfortable feelings, quietening every thought or always trying to reach a place of calm.
It all belongs.

The comfortable and uncomfortable. The calm and the restless. The joy, frustration, tension, sadness and everything in between.

Embodiment is about noticing what’s here and becoming curious about what we’re experiencing in our bodies, without immediately needing to change or fix it.

Sometimes the practice is simply to notice, allow and recognise that it all belongs. 🤍

Many people living with anxiety, chronic stress or the effects of trauma find themselves asking the same question:
“I know I’m safe… so why does my body still feel anxious?”

The answer often lies in the nervous system.
Our minds can understand that the danger has passed, but our bodies don’t always receive that message straight away. When we’ve experienced stress, overwhelm or trauma, the nervous system can remain in a protective state, keeping us on high alert long after we’re actually safe.

This isn’t because you’re weak, broken or “overreacting.” It’s your body’s way of trying to protect you using patterns that once made sense.

Healing isn’t only about changing your thoughts. It’s also about helping your body experience safety again through gentle awareness, nervous system regulation, embodiment and compassionate practice.
The more we learn to listen to our bodies with curiosity instead of judgement, the more opportunities we create for healing.

✨ What helps your body feel just a little safer today? Share in the comments you might inspire someone else.

Therapist Myths #4: If you’re stressed or overwhelmed, you just need to relax more. 🧠

Stress and overwhelm can be much more complex than simply needing to “calm down”.

Feeling overwhelmed can be a sign that she 'what’s being asked of us is exceeding what we have capacity for in that moment'. That could come from the demands of the day, sensory overload, relationships, work, or a combination of lots of little things.

Rather than immediately asking, 'How can I calm down?', we can get curious about what our nervous system might be communicating and ask:

'What does my nervous system need from me right now?'

Sometimes that might be rest or relaxation. But it could also be talking to someone, meeting a friend, making a cup of tea, moving your body or simply giving yourself some space.

There isn’t one universal way to respond to stress. 🤍

If you're looking for a class that helps you slow down, release tension and reconnect with your body, this could be exactly what you need.

My Somatic Yoga for Mobility & Relaxation class combines myofascial release, yin yoga, meditation and gentle, intuitive movement to help you move with greater ease both physically and mentally.

Using therapy balls and supportive props, we'll gently work into the connective tissue to ease areas of tightness and improve mobility. Through longer-held yin postures, guided meditation and body-led movement, you'll have the opportunity to quiet your mind, calm your nervous system and reconnect with how your body feels.

This class is ideal if you're carrying stress, feeling stiff or restricted, recovering from the demands of everyday life, or simply craving a slower, more restorative way to move. There is no pressure to achieve, perform or keep up, just an invitation to listen to your body and meet yourself with kindness.

No previous yoga experience is needed, and you'll be guided every step of the way with options to suit your body.

Join me on Tuesdays, 6.15–7.30pm at Make Space, New Mills, and discover how slowing down can help you move, feel and live with greater ease.

What actually is Ecstatic Dance?✨

Maybe it’s something you’ve wanted to try, but you have absolutely no idea what to expect and that’s completely okay.

We arrive together and begin in a circle, gently connecting and exploring some movement together. You might feel nervous, unsure, excited… or a mixture of all three.

As the music begins, it takes you on a journey. 🎶

You might start soft and gentle, gradually move around the space, dance freely, or even choose to lie down. There are no steps to learn and no choreography to follow it’s about listening to your body and responding in whatever way feels right for you.

At the end, we slow things down, settle and land back together with a closing circle. 🤍
