Look at this aged wax plug in one of patients ear. You can see how dark the wax is, it’s been down there for some time. Even with 2 weeks of olive oil drops it’s still rock hard but now we can move it.

You can see me trying to rotate it to best pull it out in one go. We managed it and the patient felt relief but also dismay that their ears were in that condition 🫤

Patient said it was the best £65 they spent in a long time 🤣

No issues beyond the wax, all landmarks intact and the patient can now hear fully again…..yay!

We all love cotton buds…..they are a functional and useful tool for beauty and hygiene like sticking in our ears.

The myth is that they clean out the wax build up, we know this because we see the wax on the tip after a good twist and swirl…..satisfying!!!!

In actual fact you just push the wax further down the canal putting pressure against the tympanic membrane. The wax you see on the cotton bud is from the wall of the ear canal.
