Mabon ~ Autumn Equinox 🍂

Mabon is the theme of my yoga classes this week, so it feels lovely to pause here on the Equinox itself.

I’m sitting in the garden with a cup of tea, looking up at the trees.

The sky is blue.

The leaves are still mostly green, but here and there, there’s the first hint of yellow.

A subtle sign that things are changing.

Tonight marks the Autumn Equinox ~ a moment of balance, when day and night are almost equal.

And then, little by little, the darkness begins to gather.

I love these turning points in the year.

The apples are ripening.

The fungi are appearing in the woods.

The light is changing.

The trees are beginning to let go.

Mabon is traditionally a time of harvest and gratitude ~ a chance to pause and notice what has grown, what we have gathered, and what we might now be ready to let go of.

So perhaps tonight is simply an invitation to pause.

To have a cup of tea.

To look up.

To notice the small signs of change.

And to appreciate this moment, exactly as it is.

Happy Mabon 🍂

What can a tree teach us about yoga? 🌳

We’ve been exploring Tree Pose ~ Vrikshasana in my classes this week, but rather than simply practising the pose, we’ve been delving a little deeper into the philosophy behind it.

There is a beautiful teaching from the Indian saint Sri Chaitanya, who spoke of being:

more humble than a blade of grass, more tolerant than a tree, and giving without seeking recognition in return.

I love the qualities held in that image of the tree.

Grounding.
Strength.
Balance.
Humility.
Patience.
Tolerance.
Generosity.

A tree stands firmly rooted, weathering the seasons, while reaching upwards and outwards. It gives shade, shelter, food and a home to countless other beings, yet it is also part of a vast network of inter-connection.

Its roots connect with fungi beneath the soil. It receives nourishment from the earth, water and sunlight. Its branches reach out into the wider ecosystem.

There is both generosity and reciprocity.

And perhaps that’s the invitation of Tree Pose too.

To find our roots.

To grow upwards.

To find our balance.

To notice our strength.

To recognise what we can receive, and what we can give.

And to remember that, just like the tree, we are part of something much bigger than ourselves.

These are qualities we can cultivate on the mat, and then carry with us into our everyday lives.

The seasons are changing.

I can feel it in the air.

The light is shifting.
The mornings are cooler.
The leaves are beginning to turn.

And today, the rain in my face and the wind in my hair.

A little bit wild.
A little bit dishevelled.
And actually… rather lovely.

There’s something about this time of year that reminds me we don’t have to hold everything so neatly.

We can soften our grip.
Let the wind ruffle us.
Let the rain fall.
Let ourselves be changed a little by the season.

Just noticing.

We’ll finish with 15 minutes of mini EcoNidra ~ where savasana meets nature connection.

Recently in my yoga classes, we’ve been imagining ourselves sitting quietly in a wooded glade.

The leaves beginning to change around us.

Golden, brown, perhaps a little red.

Just noticing the colours, the shapes, the feeling of the season beginning to turn.

And then, on a walk through the woods, I came across leaves like this.

Beautiful red leaves scattered across the woodland floor.

I love those little moments when something from your practice suddenly appears in the world around you.

Of course, I deliberately theme my classes around the seasons, so it wasn’t really a coincidence.

But there was still something lovely about seeing it for real.

It made me wonder how often these little connections are happening around us ~ if only we slow down enough to notice them.

I’ve been thinking about this, along with a rather curious tree, a few robins and the changing season, in this week’s Just Noticing blog.

A little glimpse into Saturday’s Autumn’s Embrace 🍎🍂

There’s something I love about gathering a collection of simple, seasonal things together and letting them become part of the experience.

A few treasures from the garden, essential oils, oracle cards, candlelight and plenty of space to simply slow down.

And that’s exactly what we did.

We moved, breathed, rested, noticed and connected ~ with nature, and with each other.

It was such a lovely afternoon. Thank you to everyone who came and shared it with me. 🤎

And if you missed Autumn’s Embrace, the next gathering is Whispers of the Woods on Saturday 10th October.

A morning of woodland folklore, essential oils, nature connection and EcoNidra ~ inspired by the stories and magic of the woods.

I’d love to welcome you there. 🌳

I’ve been wondering about this tree for quite a while. 🌳

I walk past it regularly, and often stop for a moment to say hello.

One huge trunk at the bottom, with an oak growing alongside what I think are three beech trunks, all reaching up towards the sky.

How did they come to grow together?

And what is it called when trees do this?

I’ve started noticing more examples around me ~ usually two trees of the same kind that have grown close and gradually joined.

Supporting each other. Sharing their lives.

Beautiful.

But an oak alongside three beech trunks, apparently sharing the same base?

That still has me wondering.

I love these little questions that come from simply looking at things.

And this week, there have been other things to notice too ~ robins joining our EcoNidra sessions, the changing colours of the leaves, and a reminder from my son to look at how quickly the season is shifting.

I’ve shared all of that in this week’s Sunday Letter.

Maybe Just Noticing really is about giving ourselves enough time to see what was already there.

It starts with an apple… 🍎

This morning I picked a few from the tree and then gathered everything I need for this afternoon’s Autumn’s Embrace.

Apple tea, homemade treats, a little paper heart for heartfelt wishes, some favourite oracle cards and a handful of essential oils — Forest Bathing, vetiver, bergamot & frankincense.

Little details, gathered with care, ready to create an afternoon of yoga, EcoNidra, Reiki, tea, treats and a little space to pause and breathe.

Now it’s all being packed up and heading to .

Almost ready to welcome everyone. 🍂

Behind the scenes at Camomile Lawn ~ 🐾

I haven’t been planning Autumn’s Embrace retreat alone…

Someone had decided he needed to supervise the proceedings.

Very important work, obviously.
Checking the laptop.
Reviewing the plans.
Making sure the retreat was up to scratch.

I’m not sure how much actual work was achieved, but there was certainly plenty of purring. 😂

Autumn’s Embrace ~ 12th September
A gentle afternoon of yoga, nature, Reiki, EcoNidra, tea and a little space to pause and breathe.

Now, back to the planning… assuming I can get my desk back. 🍂

There’s something about this time of year that makes me want to slow down. 🍎

To notice the apples hanging from the trees.
The changing light.
The gentle shift from summer towards autumn.

Autumn’s Embrace is my invitation to pause and spend a little time reconnecting with yourself and with the season around you.

This Saturday at , we’ll move through a gentle seasonal yoga practice, settle into the stillness of EcoNidra, and weave in time to connect with nature and the changing season.

A few hours to step away from the busy-ness of everyday life, breathe, move, rest and simply be.

There are just a couple of spaces available if you’d like to join me. 🍂

Saturday 12th September | 2-5pm

I’d love to share the afternoon with you. 🤎
