I used to be the mum who thought I had to do it all. 🧺

If I was home, I should be doing something.
If the baby was sleeping, I should be cleaning.
If someone offered to help, I’d say “I’m fine”.

Basically… I was a martyr. 😂
What's the point in accepting help it's easier if I just do it. I liked being in control, but at what cost?

And looking back, I wish I’d understood sooner that accepting help doesn’t mean you’re not coping. Resting doesn’t mean you’re lazy. And letting someone else take over for a little while doesn’t make you any less of a mum.

Sometimes you need to let go a little.

Let someone else hold the baby.
Let the washing wait.
Let someone make you a cup of tea ☕️
Go and have a shower without rushing.
Lie down. Watch something. Scroll. Sit in silence.

And most importantly, give yourself permission to switch your mum brain off for a little while.

Your baby doesn't need you to be “on” every minute of the day.

You don't have to earn your rest by exhausting yourself first. 🤍

And I say all of this from experience… because I was that woman.

So please, don't be a martyr like I was. Let people help you. Rest. Breathe. And remember that looking after yourself is part of looking after your baby too.

Part 2: Teaching your toddler the skill of independent play 💛

Independent play isn’t something toddlers are just “born knowing” how to do… it’s a skill we can gently teach them. 🌱

Start small.

⏰ Use a timer for just a few minutes and let your child know:

“I’m going to have my cup of tea, and you’re going to have some special play time. When the timer goes off, I’ll come back and see what you’ve been doing.”

The goal isn’t to leave them for long periods, it’s to slowly build confidence, security and the ability to enjoy their own space.

And yes… it is OK to teach your toddler that they can have some alone time in their room while you refill your own cup too. ☕️

A parent who has had a moment to breathe, eat, drink and regulate is able to show up with so much more patience and connection. ❤️

Independent play isn’t rejection.
Boundaries aren’t abandonment.
Looking after yourself matters too. ✨

Save this for when a reminder that filling your own capacity cup is part of caring for your child. 💕

"I just need 10 minutes..."

How many times have you thought that... but felt guilty for taking it?

Here's the thing...
Teaching your toddler to play independently for a few minutes isn't pushing them away. ❤️

It's teaching them an incredibly valuable life skill.

We spend so much time making sure our little ones' cups are full that we often forget to refill our own.

Whether it's eating your lunch while it's still warm ☕️, having a shower, or simply sitting down for 10 minutes without someone climbing on you...

You deserve that too.

Boundaries aren't about saying "no" to our children.

They're about showing them that everyone's needs matter, including Mum's.

And the beautiful thing?

Children thrive when they know what to expect. Loving, consistent boundaries help them feel safe and secure.

✨ In Part 2, I'll show you exactly how I introduce independent play using a timer and small, achievable steps, so it feels positive rather than upsetting.

Save this if you need the reminder that looking after yourself isn't selfish... it's part of looking after your family. 🤍

Nobody warns you how noisy newborns are! 😅

I can't tell you how many parents ask me if all the grunting and squeaking is normal.

The good news? Most of the time, it absolutely is.

Newborns spend a lot of time in active (REM) sleep, so they move around, pull faces, grunt, snuffle and make all sorts of strange little noises. It can be quite a shock if you're expecting a peacefully sleeping baby!

Of course, if your baby is struggling to breathe, has a blue or pale colour, persistent chest recession, or you're worried for any reason, always seek medical advice.

Did your newborn sound like a tiny dinosaur too? 🦖😂

Let me know in the comments!
