šæ Community, Connection, and the Power of a Pause
As a volunteer with the Olive Tree Cancer Support Group and Horsham Matters, I was delighted to take part in yesterdayās event. A wonderful location, inspiring facilitators ( Tara and ), and a reminder of the incredible work carried out by volunteers across Horsham District Council.
One message stood out: a threeāminute mindfulness pause can shift your entire physiology: calming the body, clearing the mind, and helping you continue through your day with more ease.
In my clinical work, I see the same pattern again and again: the inability to pause. A *real* pause. The kind that resets your system rather than simply filling the space between tasks.
Itās the feeling of needing a holiday even though youāve just returned from one. Itās forgetting to step outside, breathe, and reconnect with nature: no fancy labels required, just movement and presence.
Yesterday, after the event, I walked through the beautifu Warnham nature reserve. And then one of those small, unexpected moments happened, the kind that stays with you. I stopped to take a photo and a gentleman paused beside me on the bridge. He was struggling to walk, but he carried a huge camera with such determination. We chatted, walked a little, and when he sat down I thought Iād continue⦠until a robin landed nearby and began to sing for us. And then followed us.
Moments later, two goldcrests appeared, a sight the gentleman hadnāt enjoyed in months. So there we were: discussing , , and life, sharing a simple that made both our days a little brighter.
Sometimes connection arrives quietly. Sometimes nature does the regulating for you. And sometimes the smallest pause becomes the most meaningful moment. Just like that.
