When Joan first came to me, she wasn’t asking to climb mountains or run a marathon.
She just wanted to be able to stand without leaning on something.
Even then, she could only manage it for a very short time. She was in considerable pain, despite having had three cortisone injections and physio.
But the physical pain wasn’t the whole story. Joan had started to believe that her life was going to become smaller and smaller. In her own words: “I was convinced my future was housebound.”
I can only imagine how frightening it must feel to look ahead and see the life you love gradually disappearing from view.
So we didn’t begin with big goals or push her body harder.
We started where she was and helped her body feel safe enough to move, then we gradually rebuilt her strength, capacity and (perhaps most importantly) her trust in what her body could do.
Then, some time later, Joan travelled around Argentina. She was walking up to 13,000 steps a day.
From fearing she would become housebound to exploring another country on foot.
That is why this work is so important to me.
It isn’t really about completing exercises. It’s about being able to say yes without first wondering whether your body will cope.
As Joan told me:
“I have far more energy and no longer put off doing things - I just get on with them. I can say yes to things without worrying if I’ll keep up. Now, I can look forward to my future with confidence.” This week she’s at the Eisteddfod Festival.
Your body may be struggling right now and that deserves to be taken seriously.
But where you are today does not automatically decide where you can go next.
Where you are now is not your life sentence.
