Qualified as a counsellor… what comes next?
Finishing your counselling qualification is a huge milestone, but for many counsellors, the next question is:
“How do I actually start working for myself?”
Setting up in private practice can feel overwhelming. There is much more to think about than simply finding clients — from professional registration and insurance to supervision, GDPR, safeguarding, contracts, record keeping and HMRC.
So I created this simple infographic to bring the key steps together in one place.
Whether you are newly qualified, approaching the end of your training, or simply considering private practice for the future, I hope it makes the process feel a little clearer.
One thing I would always emphasise: qualifying doesn't mean learning stops. Good private practice is built on ethical working, appropriate supervision, continued professional development and knowing when to seek guidance.
For counsellors already in private practice:
What is one thing you wish someone had told you when you first became self-employed?
Your experience might help someone who is just starting out.
