Your thoracic spine is more important than most think.

It connects to your rib cage → your breathing → your diaphragm → your pelvic floor. When it’s stiff, the whole system is altered.

Most people are locked up here because we spend hours hunched over phones/desks and even train in forward-flexion patterns (many runners are locked up here as well) & most never actively work on their mid back.

A stiff mid-back isn’t just a posture problem - it’s a breathing problem, a core problem, and a pain problem.

Mobilize your thoracic spine. Your whole body will thank you.

Here are the 3 most common movement strategies I catch assessing the step down - I’m exaggerating them in the video so you can see what’s happening!

But go try it yourself: no overthinking, just step down how it feels natural, get someone to film you, then slow it down and see what you spot. You might surprise yourself.

Your spine can flex, extend, rotate, and side-bend. Most of us spend our entire day in one direction.

Think about your average day: you wake up, sit at a desk, maybe go for a walk, sit again, sleep.

That’s almost exclusively sagittal plane movement - forward and back in limited ranges. Rotation? Lateral flexion? Barely a look-in.

The spine is designed for variety. Joints and discs stay healthier when they’re loaded through their full range (synovial fluid circulates, tissues remodel, and the surrounding muscles learn to work together rather than compensate).

Research consistently links sedentary & repetitive movement patterns with increased spinal stiffness and pain sensitisation over time.

This doesn’t mean you need a complex programme. It means you need to start with a few minutes of intentional spinal movement (in your pain-free range) to change how your back feels and functions long-term.

Your spine isn’t just a structure to protect. It’s a system built to move. Start treating it that way.

If you can’t touch your toes, your body probably isn’t broken - it just doesn’t trust that range yet.

Most people have passive stiffness, not structural limitation. The Jefferson curl loads the spine in flexion under control, teaching the nervous system that this range is safe.

This is graded exposure - slowly introducing end-range flexion to reduce the protective guarding that’s been restricting you in the first place.

Passive stretching gives you flexibility you can’t control. The Jefferson curl builds active mobility - eccentric hamstring and erector strength at end range.

Someone who can’t touch their toes needs strength in that range, not just more time on a foam roller.

The good news? This movement is very scalable.

Start feet flat on the floor, no load, go only as far as feels comfortable. Building confidence in movement matters just as much as the movement itself - a lot of people have simply lost trust in their bodies, and this is a way to earn it back.

Trends your physio doesn’t want you to listen to & why…

Not everything you read online is wrong. But not everything is right.

These are phrases I hear regularly and the truth is, they don’t look at the big picture.

That’s why blanket statements can be so misleading. They often build unnecessary fear, when we need to be building confidence & knowledge. It’s exactly why individualised care matters.

Research evolves. Approaches change. What we knew five years ago has shifted, and it’ll keep shifting. That’s not a reason to distrust everything. It’s a reason to be discerning about what you consume and who you trust with your care.

A perfect movement snack for daily life or to add before/after a training session.

Mobility isn’t a bonus.
It’s maintenance.

Do it consistently and you’ll feel the difference - in how you move and how you recover.
