During my recent cycling trip to the Outer Hebrides, I learned about the interesting history of coffin roads. Many funeral processions travelled miles on foot to reach graveyards, and that prompted me to learn the history of these forgotten routes. I've now written a blog about what I found.

i have just returned from a cycling trip in the Outer Hebrides.

One of the first things I noticed was how the religious landscape changes as you travel through the islands.

In the southern Outer Hebrides, particularly Barra and South Uist, Roman Catholic churches are a familiar sight. Travel further north towards Lewis and Harris and you'll find the Free Church of Scotland.

While much of Scotland became Protestant after the Reformation, Catholicism remained strong in parts of the southern Hebrides. In the north, the Presbyterian tradition became deeply rooted, particularly following the Disruption of 1843.

Knowing an ancestor's religion can be an important clue when searching for baptism, marriage and burial records, as different denominations kept different records.
