Reading is great for my self-care. Earlier this year I decided that I would make more of an effort to read more books by Black Authors. Why? firstly, to support Black Authors on their journey. Secondly, to experience and appreciate the similarities and differences across Black Authored books and the extent (or not) to which their stories resonated with me.

I`ve enjoyed four books so far. Two really stand out for me. The first was ‘Black Girls Must Die Exhausted’ by Jayne Allen - it`s funny whilst containing some serious messages – a lot of which resonated with me as a Black Woman. The second, ‘Everything is Everything’ by Clive Myrie (Broadcaster/Journalist and more). His early experience of growing is familiar to many of us who grew up in a Caribbean household. He openly shares his fascinating journey as a journalist/news correspondent. I chose the audio book option and was not disappointed by Clive`s engaging style.

My next read is a gem which I recently found in my local `little library’…`Black and British', David Olusoga. I`m really looking forward to this.

If you have any suggestions for books by Black Authors please let me know. I`m always on the lookout for a good read 😊.

Today’s Dementia and Ethnic Diversity event was truly uplifting, emotional, and packed with useful insights! Hearing carers speak about their journeys was so touching. Key highlights for me included learning about organisations making a real difference, picking up handy tips for brain health and for lowering the risk of dementia.  We even got to experience the physical and mental benefits of Tai Chi—with delegates joining in a session!

Well done to the gentleman who won the prize draw a lovely, weighted teddy, which he named Tom (donated by BM Counselling and Psychotherapy).

Huge thanks to Tim Sanders and everyone involved for the wonderful event and for all you do to support people living with dementia.

What's your plan for the holiday period?

As a child, Christmas seemed magical and full of anticipation.  But, as an adult I’ve learnt that true festive joy comes from spending time with loved ones and practising self-care.

Prioritising wellbeing helps reduce stress during this busy season.  How do you plan to keep your stress levels in check? This is my plan…

·       Set boundaries – I can`t go to all the parties!

·       Stay Active – Fit in lots of runs – long runs, medium runs, short runs, Park Runs, hills, speed sessions… the lot! Festive pre-breakfast walks with the pooch!

·       Remembering loved ones – acknowledge when I feel sad, set time aside  to remember friends and family who are no longer here

·       Balance Treats: Having yummy vegan treats balanced with nutritious festive meals

·       Manage Expectations: Chilling on the sofa whenever I feel like it – not waiting until I feel exhausted or anxious; ask for help if I  need it!

·       Do lots of the things I love!

Find what works for you so that the holiday period doesn’t feel overly stressful.
