✨ HEADACHES & TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE ✨

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, a headache isn’t always treated as just a problem in the head. We look at where the pain is, what it feels like, what triggers it, and what other symptoms are happening in the body.

Different headache patterns can point towards different TCM imbalances:

🌿 Sides/temples of the head
Often associated with the Liver & Gallbladder channels and may appear alongside stress, irritability or tension.

🌿 Forehead headaches
Can relate to the Stomach channel, digestive imbalance, phlegm or dampness.

🌿 Back of the head/neck
Often involves the Bladder channel and may be associated with neck tension, muscular tightness or an external Wind pattern.

🌿 Top of the head
In TCM this area has a strong relationship with the Liver channel and can sometimes be seen with Liver Yang rising or Blood deficiency patterns.

🌿 Dull, lingering headaches
May be associated with Qi or Blood deficiency, especially alongside tiredness or weakness.

🌿 Sharp, fixed headaches
Can indicate Blood Stasis, particularly when the pain repeatedly occurs in exactly the same place.

🌿 Heavy, foggy headaches
May suggest Dampness or Phlegm, sometimes accompanied by tiredness, heaviness or digestive symptoms.

✨ How can acupuncture help?

Treatment is individually tailored and may include acupuncture points on the head, neck, hands, feet and legs to help:

• Relax tight muscles
• Encourage healthy circulation of Qi and Blood
• Reduce tension
• Calm the nervous system
• Address the underlying TCM pattern contributing to recurring headaches

At Buddhas Triangle, treatment isn’t simply about where it hurts — we look at the whole pattern to understand why your headaches may be occurring.

🌿 Moxibustion & Breech Babies — BL67 🌿

Did you know that moxibustion has traditionally been used in Chinese Medicine to support women when their baby is in a breech position?

🔥 Moxibustion (moxa) involves gently warming the acupuncture point BL67 – Zhiyin, located at the outer corner of the little toe.

Interestingly, moxibustion for breech presentation is also something that some midwives may discuss or encourage women to explore alongside their usual maternity care.

Research has investigated stimulating BL67 with moxibustion and evidence shows it can increase fetal movement and improve the likelihood of the baby moving into a head-down position. It isn’t guaranteed to turn a baby, but it continues to be studied and recommended by maternity healthcare

🤰 Safety comes first.
Moxa during pregnancy should only be considered after speaking with your midwife or maternity team to make sure it is appropriate for your individual pregnancy.

🌿 LINGERING PATHOGENS IN TCM 🌿

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, sometimes after an illness you may feel like you’ve recovered — but you’re still not quite back to yourself.

TCM traditionally describes this as a lingering or residual pathogen: the idea that the body hasn’t fully returned to balance following an illness.

You might notice:

✨ Ongoing tiredness or heaviness
✨ A cough or phlegm that hangs around
✨ Headaches or a “foggy” feeling
✨ Muscle aches or stiffness
✨ Feeling unusually hot or cold
✨ Poor sleep
✨ Digestive changes
✨ Symptoms that seem to flare when you’re tired or stressed

From a TCM perspective, the original illness may have affected the body’s Qi, Yin, Yang or fluids, while residual patterns such as Dampness, Phlegm, Heat or Wind may remain.

🪡 How acupuncture may be approached

Treatment is individual. Depending on the pattern, a TCM practitioner may focus on supporting Zheng Qi, gently clearing the residual pathogenic factor, regulating the Lung and Spleen, moving Qi, or nourishing the body after illness.

The aim isn’t simply to “boost” the body — it’s to identify what pattern is still present and what needs restoring.

🌿 Still not feeling yourself after being poorly?

A full TCM consultation looks at the whole picture, including your symptoms, tongue, pulse, sleep, digestion and energy levels.

TCM terminology describes a traditional medical framework and isn’t the same as a Western medical diagnosis. Persistent or concerning symptoms should also be assessed medically.

✨ TODAY IN THE CLINIC ✨

A lovely mix of treatments today at Buddhas Triangle 🌿

🩸 Period regulation & menstrual health
Using Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture to support healthy menstrual cycles, encourage healthy blood flow and address the individual TCM patterns behind symptoms such as painful or irregular periods.

🌿 Shoulder & back pain
Working with acupuncture to help reduce pain, release muscular tension and support movement and recovery.

One of the things I love about TCM is that two people can come in with the same symptom but receive completely different treatments.

We don’t just look at where the pain or problem is — we look at the whole picture and tailor each treatment to the individual. ✨
