I was asked in a WhatsApp group yesterday, what's one win or achievement from this week. It was meant in more of a business sense but I wanted to answer help my children cope in this heat. One of whom has refused to get dressed to leave the house but as soon as he knows we can stay home, gets into long layers and a waistcoat. Feelings have been running high because this level of heat is a totally different sensory experience and comes with different challenges and changes to our routine.
I remember a similar heatwave when my eldest was firstborn. It was a daunting responsibility on top of, you know, having a new baby. Now we are into our 6th Summer of heatwaves with littles, I've picked up a couple of tips. Please share yours in the comments too.
Keep windows shaded (curtains and windows closed until in shade)
Only open windows if in shade. Open windows on a morning and evening when it's cooler or if there is a strong breeze for air circulation. At other times it may be better with them closed.
Once its cooler/shaded enough to open windows, hang dampened light cotton in them. A large muslin works well. This works best if theres a breeze or fan.
Create a comfy ‘nest’ in the coolest room for you all to hang out in. In very hot weather, some babies and children will sleep better in cooler downstairs rooms.
Put an ice bag (or frozen large bottles of water) in front of a fan.
Inside, babies and small children may be most comfortable in just a nappy, perhaps a light vest - including for sleep. In this weather,
For skin to skin or breastfeeding, a light muslin between you can help.
Outside, stay in shade where possible and avoid afternoon sun.
Light, cool clothing protects skin and often keeps cooler than bare skin - cotton gauze, light merino wool with silk and UV swim wear can work well.
Breastfed babies 6 months and under should not be given water. Feed on demand - likely to be very often. The composition will change to provide sufficient hydration so it's important you drink a lot. Keep an eye on wet nappies, soft spot and skin elasticity and temperament.
