It’s really easy for people to get caught up in the numbers. What’s high, what’s low, what’s the quick fix.

And yes testing is incredibly useful and as a trained phlebotomist and naturopath I use testing all the time. But not in isolation.

This is why I’m not a fan of testing companies out there where you don’t get a full consultation and follow up, with practitioners who know what to look for.

Your results only make sense in the context of YOU. Looking at results without also looking at your sleep, your stress, your nutrition, your relationships, what’s been happening in your life, & how you feel is missing half the picture.

Because sometimes the thing driving the numbers is more complex.

I look at the test results & the person behind them 💕

Life update. I’m still here 🤣

Life isn’t perfect, nor is my social media. Far from it in fact. What matters MOST to me is how my patients feel. When I’m mumming and working, social media is the last thing on my list.

As the end of the school holidays approach, if you’re needing some help with nutrition, hormones, weight management, gut health, iron issues, thyroid support, nervous system regulation I’m here.

As a 42 year old mum of twins, with previous hypothyroid, constipation, anaemia, hormonal imbalance and still always working on nervous system balance, I get it.

I pride myself on zero judgement, just support, and working protocols to fit people’s lives not an unrealistic ideal.

My post about ferritin got lots of questions, and I want to make something super clear...

Ferritin is a really useful marker. Blood/hormone/stool testing are all really useful. I use these tools all the time.

BUT. Testing is only as useful as the interpretation that comes afterwards.

A low ferritin result in isolation doesn't tell me how you feel, what you're eating, how your periods are, your mental health, your sleep, the stress your might be under, how well you are absorbing your nutrients or whether that result is part of a longer pattern, or not.

And I think this is where some wellness professions can go a little backwards.

We can now access MORE tests, MORE quickly than ever before. But more data doesn't automatically mean more understanding.

Finding an out of range marker and immediately buying the supplement that promises to fix it might change the number - but it doesn't necessarily answer the more important question of why it was low in the first place.

For me, one of the biggest strengths of naturopathic practice is having the time to zoom out, join the dots and look at the person alongside the data. Because symptoms rarely have one neat root cause.

Testing can be hugely valuable. But if you are not then analysing them purposefully, alongside symptoms, history and the wider picture you end up chasing individual markers in isolation - which is why I can't/won't give off the cuff advice online . Bodies are complex, symptoms overlap, and the personal context changes how we interpret what we see.

Call me old fashioned, but in a world that wants faster testing, faster answers, and faster fixes, I still think taking the time to properly listen is one of the most valuable clinical tools we have. 💛

Blood tests give us the data. The person gives it meaning.

Iron is one of those nutrients where we can sometimes forget its importance. It plays a HUGE role in energy production, oxygen transport, cognition, exercise capacity, thyroid health and overall wellbeing. I keep seeing woman with low iron & ferritin coming into clinic.

When iron stores start to drop, you will feel it.

Low ferritin is only one marker of iron status, but low iron stores ALONE can be associated with symptoms such as fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, brain fog, headaches, hair shedding, low mood, irritability and restless legs — even before someone develops full blown iron-deficiency anaemia.

That’s also why I don’t like looking at ferritin as a standalone number. The bigger question is:

Why are your iron stores low?
Is it related to intake?
Absorption?
Heavy periods or another source of blood loss?
Increased requirements?
Training load?
Or a combination of factors?

Your wider blood results, symptoms, health history, menstrual history, digestion and diet all help build that picture.

One practical tip: ALWAYS ask your GP for a copy of your blood test results. “Everything is normal” doesn’t give you the same information as actually seeing your results, trends and reference ranges for yourself. And if low ferritin is something that keeps coming back for you — or you’re struggling to understand why — this is exactly the kind of detective work I do with clients in clinic.

We look beyond simply getting the number up and work on understanding the potential drivers behind it.

If you’d like support piecing together your symptoms, blood results and possible drivers, you can book in to work with me.

Save this for your next blood test + send it to someone who is always being told their iron is “a bit low”.

I see this everyday in clinic.

There are no one size fits all for health. I treat people. I talk to people, I have the luxury of long appointments to hear people. Two people can have the exact same symptom profile with completely different underlying issues.

Knowing the person underneath the symptoms or diagnoses is key to helping understand root causes and drivers 💚

And that’s what I love doing.
