In the wise words of legendary Dolly Parton
"You'll never do a whole lot unless you're brave enough to try."
I wouldn't call myself a brave person. If you asked me in the moment, I'd say I just made a decision and did the thing. But looking back, there's actually quite a list.
The time I quit my job to go to America for the summer, on my own. My company got a temp in and kept my job open.
The time I quit another job to go travelling for 5 months. Same thing — temp in, role held.
The time I asked for a sabbatical because I was burnt out and didn't really know how to say that out loud. Approved in 48 hours. Paid.
The time I got a working holiday visa and moved to Australia for a year. Landed an EA role at Ernst & Young, paid off the loan I'd taken out the year before to go travelling, and came home with more money than I left with.
The time I jumped out of a plane in New Zealand — despite being genuinely scared of heights.
The time I went to Peru on my own for a month and came back with a Canadian boyfriend I hadn't planned on meeting.
And the big one — leaving a well paid EA Team Lead role three years ago, retraining as a Health Coach for a year, and building this business from scratch with no idea what I am doing!
None of it felt brave while I was doing it. It felt like panic, or exhaustion, or just needing something to change. It's only looking back that I can see the pattern.
There are probably more moments I've forgotten about too and that feels worth remembering on a day like today.
So however you'd say it in your own words: be more Dolly. Be more you.
