This month is Stress Awareness Month, it serves as a gateway to open up conversations about stress, signpost people to the right support and help us prioritise our mental health.

If things are a little stressful, it is important to take steps to manage and alleviate stress before it becomes a more serious issue and takes a longer term toll on your health.

Here are 5 things you can do to help relieve stress:

1. Exercise - moving your body is important

2. Set boundaries - learning to say no and stop trying to take on so much

3. Reduce caffeine - this can increase anxiety so reduce wherever possible

4. Do yoga or meditate - practising mindfulness in some form can dramatically elevate stress

5. Write down your concerns - this simple act can help release your concerns

We hope these tips are helpful!

In times of danger or emergencies, it's natural to feel overwhelmed and anxious, especially when the situation involves someone close to you. Navigating through sudden crises can be challenging, but it's crucial to remain calm and composed. As first aid trainers accustomed to preparing individuals for emergencies, we're here to share valuable tips on staying collected in the face of danger.

➡️Strategies for Staying Calm

1. Controlled Breathing:

Amidst emergencies, it's common for your heart rate and breathing to escalate. To regain control, slow down and deepen your breaths. Inhale deeply, expanding your breath through your diaphragm, helping to calm your breathing, lower your heart rate, and focus your mind.

2. Empowering Phrases:

Selecting a positive phrase to repeat can anchor your focus on the situation. Phrases like "It's going to be okay" or "I can do this" serve as reassuring mantras, helping you maintain a positive mindset during critical moments.

3. Mindfulness Techniques:

Incorporating mindfulness techniques can significantly reduce stress and promote a sense of calmness. Pause, take a breath, and recognize your emotions before addressing the situation. Engage in mindfulness breathing or meditation to enhance your ability to stay composed under pressure.

➡️Empowering Yourself with Knowledge:

1. First Aid Training:

Knowledge is a powerful tool, especially in emergencies. Equipping yourself with first aid training provides essential skills to handle various medical situations. Regular refresher courses ensure your skills remain current, boosting your confidence in effectively aiding when needed.

2. Recognising Signs of Distress:

Identifying signs of medical distress, such as heart attacks, strokes, asthma attacks, or allergic reactions, is crucial for effective first aid. Being able to support someone in need and maintaining a calm demeanour are key aspects of providing assistance. Knowing when and how to call for help adds another layer of preparedness.

No matter the circumstance, we hope you'll face it calmly and confidently, armed with the insights we've provided.
