Lerwick Town Hall is lit purple and yellow tonight (Friday 18th October) to mark Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day.

Developmental Language Disorder is a hidden but common disability that affects 1 in 14 people causing difficulties understanding and using language for no known reason.

Daily life at school and work often involves talk, lots of talk. And spoken language is a barrier to learning and working for people with Developmental Language Disorder. By we can increase recognition and help everyone get the support they need to thrive in education and at work.

We aim to light up the world in purple and yellow to send a message to people with DLD that we see them and support them. We had 108 last year, and we want even more this year.
Contact a local landmark (big or small) and ask them to light up. It's easy with the letter on our website: https://radld.org/dld-awareness-day/light-up-events/
If you are a parent or teacher then involve your child/children in writing the letter (maybe adding a picture). Harder to refuse a request from a child!

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) does have 'disorder' in the name, but really it is a 'difference.' People with DLD, like Eloise here, are clever, especially as they need to find creative ways to communicate. When the words don't come out and when things others say don't make sense, people with DLD will find other ways to communicate.

And sometimes they need a little bit of understanding from the people they are talking to. A bit more time, a few less words and a little empathy.

NOTE: DLD stands for Developmental Language Disorder. It is a difficulty with understanding and using spoken words and sentences. It has a neurodevelopmental basis, so people are born with it and don't 'just grow out of it', and it is not caused by their parents not talking to them. It impacts on learning, literacy, relationships and employment. Every person with DLD is different.
