🐐 The Three Billy Goats Gruff 🌈

We have had a wonderful week bringing The Three Billy Goats Gruff to life! The acorns thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story told using our wooden story figures and props. They were so engaged that they returned to them independently throughout the week, confidently acting out the story and retelling familiar parts in their own play. 📚✨

Despite the wild weather this week, we were determined to get outdoors! Wrapped up in puddle suits and wellies, we headed off on our very own troll hunt. The acorns loved “trip trapping” over the little wooden bridges across the streams and embraced the pouring rain with huge smiles and lots of excitement! 🌧️👣

Through our play, we focused on positional language such as “over,” “under,” “on top of,” and “underneath,” as well as exploring different sizes – small, medium and big – just like the three goats in the story. The acorns became little engineers, constructing bridges using wooden blocks, lollipop sticks and paper cups. Our much-loved train track also became part of the learning, with the acorns building bridges for the trains to travel under. The wooden rainbow proved very useful as ready-made bridges too! 🚂🌉

We also visited the real Billy Goats Gruff at the farm, and enjoyed crossing lots of bridges at soft play, helping to support our physical development through climbing, balancing and exploring. 🐐💪

Our learning continued outdoors in the garden, where we used old bed slats to create bridges over the water tray for animal figures to cross. The acorns took great care balancing the animals on the wooden planks, showing fantastic concentration and problem-solving skills. 🪵💦

What a fun-filled week of storytelling, imagination, outdoor adventures and hands-on learning! Have a lovely weekend all!

🐸 5 Little Speckled Frogs 🐸

This week we focused on the nursery rhyme ‘5 Little Speckled Frogs’, which lent itself to so much learning across different areas including number, communication and language, physical development, and understanding the world.

We introduced our theme at the beginning of the week with a sensory tray, singing the song lots of times and using toy frogs to act out the frogs jumping into the pool. The acorns loved discovering that tadpoles are baby frogs as we explored the frog life cycle together. This continued with water play in the garden and plenty of practice jumping like frogs! 🐸💦

On a rainy day (weather frogs love!) we went on a frog hunt at our local market, counting how many frogs we could find — 5 golden frogs! After getting a little soggy, we stopped at the library to dry off and enjoyed sharing books together📚☔

Following the success of ‘Feed the Sharks’ before half term, the acorns also had the opportunity to ‘Feed the Frogs’. They loved using spoons, tweezers and their fingers to fill up the hungry frogs, all while reinforcing the vocabulary we had introduced throughout the week.

We finished the week by celebrating one of the little acorn’s second birthday with a trip to the gymnastics centre. There was lots of bouncing on trampolines, hopping from one piece of equipment to the next, and so much fun was had by all! 🎉🤸‍♀️

What a fantastic week of learning through play! Have a lovely weekend all!

🌊🐠 Under the Sea! 🐚🦈

This week we dived into an ‘Under the Sea’ adventure and had so much fun exploring, creating and learning through play! 💙

The acorns explored taste-safe sand made from blended cereal, using sea creature figures and shells to scoop, dig and discover different textures. 🐚🐙

Out in the garden, we enjoyed catching fish with fishing nets while singing “Once I Caught a Fish Alive” 🎣🐟 — combining movement, music and lots of giggles!

Our little artists created beautiful ocean scenes using paint dabbers before sticking on silhouette sea creature shapes. This encouraged the acorns to make connections between their movements and the marks they make while exploring different mark-making materials. 🎨🌊

We also enjoyed a lovely outing to our local garden centre aquarium where we fed the fish, followed by some very serious sandcastle building (and squishing!) at the park sandpit! 🐠🏰

The biggest hit of the week was definitely our ‘Feed the Sharks’ sensory tray! 🦈 The acorns were deeply engaged, carefully filling spoons and tipping rice into the sharks’ mouths. Soon, they began using shells as scoops too, and we practised counting how many spoonfuls it took to fill the hungry sharks!

We finished our week the best way possible… with LOTS of bubbles! 🫧 Because you can never go wrong with bubbles! 💙

That half term flew by! Have a lovely bank holiday weekend all and enjoy the sunshine! ☀️

🐜🪳🐞🦋 Minibeasts 🐛🪰🐌🪲

We’ve had a wonderful week exploring the world of minibeasts! The acorns loved investigating different bugs and creepy crawlies in our sensory tuff trays. The older acorns used their matching skills to find and pair the minibeast cards together.

We made the most of the outdoors despite the changeable weather! The acorns had lots of fun with water play using lilypads and dragonflies, and we enjoyed some exciting outings too. We visited the zoo where we wandered through the beautiful butterfly house before heading into the Softplay to crawl, jump and wiggle like little bugs! 🦋🐛

Another highlight was our trip to the Bug Stop playground in the woods, where the acorns explored the play equipment and went on a minibeast hunt using magnifying glasses. 🔍🐜

We reused our homemade playdough from last week, pressing different bug shapes into the dough and strengthening those all-important finger muscles through play.

This week the acorns have been busy little bees! 🐝 🌼

They enjoyed lots of sensory play alongside exploring our toy bee hive.

They loved using their fine motor skills with the tongs to rescue the colourful wooden bees from their hive!

We went on a bee and dandelion hunt, made our own dandelion tea and created some beautiful dandelion artwork. The acorns especially loved making their own “Dan-de-lions” and bumblebees while exploring the wildlife on the field — rolling amongst the flowers, blowing dandelion seeds and enjoying nature around us.

There were lots of giggles during our bee song as the bee landed on our toes, nose and elbows! 🎶🐝

We also explored the colour yellow in our environment, while the younger acorns investigated a yellow treasure basket filled with exciting objects to discover.

A lovely week full of nature, creativity, sensory exploration and fun 💛 Have a lovely weekend all!

🦖 Dinosaurs! 🦕

What a roar-some week we have had exploring all things dinosaur! The acorns enjoyed lots of imaginative role play, roaring like dinosaurs and stomping their feet along to some of our favourite stories including Ten Little Dinosaurs, 123 Do the Dinosaur, That’s Not My Dinosaur and Dinosaur Roar.

Our little palaeontologists had great fun digging in the sand for fossils and using brushes to carefully sweep the sand away to reveal their discoveries. Afterwards, they enjoyed washing the sandy dinosaurs in the water tray and getting them sparkling clean again.

Our train lovers were very busy connecting the carriages of our dinosaur train and creating their own exciting journeys.

The younger acorns explored dinosaur themed sensory and small world tuff trays, while the older acorns developed their matching and problem-solving skills by connecting the heads and tails of the dinosaur connect toys and matching the colours together.

We also took our dinosaur adventures to the local park, where we uncovered more fossils and enjoyed even more sand play. With the beautiful weather, we made the most of being outdoors and created dinosaur footprint paintings. The acorns used toy dinosaurs to stomp through the paint and make colourful marks across large sheets of paper. They especially loved giving the paint-covered dinosaurs a bath afterwards!

🚧 Construction Week Fun! 🚧

The acorns have been busy little builders, experimenting with a variety of building materials and loose parts. We saw some impressive tall towers being created… and of course, being knocked down again! 😄

Simple tuff tray set-ups encouraged the acorns to revisit familiar toys in new and exciting ways. By presenting resources differently, items that are always available suddenly became enticing, sparking lots of curiosity and engagement.

There was plenty of shared play with bricks and blocks, inspiring creativity across the group. One acorn even designed his own parking bays for the toy vehicles and trains—such lovely imaginative thinking!

The train tracks were a big hit this week, with the acorns spending long periods designing and building their own layouts around the room.

In the sand area, the construction vehicles brought lots of hands-on fun—digging, scooping, tipping, pouring, and filling. To top it all off, we visited a local farm digger village, where the acorns could extend their imaginative play and practise walking through the dry sand. 🚜

My favourite time of year! What a wonderful week we’ve had celebrating the beautiful bluebells and the letter B! 💙🌿 Blue, Bluebells, Bees and Birthdays!!! 🎉

We began with a blissful walk in the woods, where the acorns were truly captivated by the magical sight of the bluebells in bloom. We listened carefully to the birds singing and took time to admire all the lovely colours around us — such a calm and special experience for everyone.

Back at our setting, the acorns got creative making their own abstract bluebell paintings. Using corks to print onto a green background, they produced some beautiful, unique artwork🎨

We also enjoyed potting plants and taking care of the bluebells in the garden, carefully watering them and learning how to look after growing things 🌱

For our younger acorns, we focused on the colour blue with a sensory treasure basket, encouraging exploration through touch and play.

Story time was extra special this week as we shared ‘The Tale of Who-Bell’ by local author, Carli-Ann Smith. The acorns loved bringing the story to life with Bertie the Bee 🐝

We also celebrated two very special birthdays — our youngest turned 1 and our eldest turned 2! A very happy birthday to them both 🥳🎂

To finish off our week, we used pipettes to squeeze blue water paint onto cotton bluebells, watching as they changed colour. This was a fantastic activity for strengthening little fingers while introducing new vocabulary.

A week full of nature, creativity, and lots of smiles 💙 Have a lovely weekend all!

🌸🐣 Final Week of Spring Term 🐣🌸

What a lovely way to finish our spring term! This week the acorns have been busy enjoying lots of seasonal fun and hands-on learning.

We enjoyed an exciting Easter egg hunt in the garden, where everyone had great fun searching high and low and celebrating their discoveries. The acorns also completed their beautiful Easter egg cards, using wax resist crayon and painting over the top with watercolours – they were fascinated watching their designs appear like magic! 🎨✨

We enjoyed a visit to the farm to see the rabbits and chickens, which was a big hit with everyone. On our various walks, we’ve been spotting all the lovely signs of spring, chatting about what we can see and hear around us. 🌼🌱

Sensory play has been very popular this week, with lots of pouring, scooping and immersing in coloured rice. The acorns always enjoy exploring different textures and developing their coordination through play. We also used spring-themed cookie cutters with playdough, helping to strengthen those important fine motor muscles in little hands. 👐

It’s been a wonderful week full of creativity, exploration and seasonal fun. Wishing all our families a happy and relaxing break! 🐰💛

🐦‍⬛🦆🪺 A glorious week of weather for a spot of bird watching!

The acorns got creative making their own bird nests using sticks, carefully building and designing their own little homes just like real birds. They also had lots of fun making bird feeders using pine cones, peanut butter and bird seed – a fantastic hands-on activity that everyone really enjoyed! We then hung the feeders in the garden and used binoculars to spot and identify the different birds that came to visit.

We took our learning further with a trip to Tiddenfoot Lake, where the acorns enjoyed feeding the ducks and continuing their bird watching in a new environment. Another highlight of the week was our visit to Rushmere. The acorns were fascinated watching live footage of baby herons in their nest, and we even had a go at building our own nests in the woods!

Not forgetting St Patrick’s Day ☘️ Our littlest acorn came dressed for the occasion and looked ever so cute in his shamrock outfit ready for some play in a very green tuff tray!

I can’t believe next week is the last week of the Spring term. Have a lovely weekend all!
