Colleagues at Broadgreen Hospital are celebrating the opening of a newly refurbished, state-of-the-art operating theatre 🥳

Following a £1 million investment, the upgraded Theatre 8 now features ultra-clean air technology to help reduce the risk of infection, enhanced facilities to support more complex procedures, and the latest 4K imaging technology to improve the surgical environment for both patients and staff.

The investment will help teams carry out more operations safely throughout the year, improving access to treatment for patients across the region.

Jeff Woods, Clinical Services Manager for Theatres at Broadgreen Hospital, said: "We're delighted to have completed this project, which will mean we can operate on more patients, safely throughout the year."

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this fantastic new facility to life 👏

A dedicated Ketamine Clinic at Aintree University Hospital featured on BBC North West Tonight 🎥

Aintree’s Urology Centre featured in a BBC North West Tonight series last night exploring the rising trend in ketamine use and highlighting the great work our Urology Team is doing for patients who are experiencing lasting side effects from taking the drug over a period of time.

The Ketamine Clinic was established to help patients across Cheshire and Merseyside who have been referred by their GP with urological side effects that have been caused by Ketamine use. Chronic usage affects the lining of the bladder, and can shrink it, leading to frequency in needing to urinate, infections, bleeding, blockages and incontinence.

Celebrating our latest Team of the Month winners 🥳

Alcohol Care team - their care has made a life-changing difference to a patient who had struggled with alcohol dependency since their teenage years. In their nomination, the patient said: "I am still under the alcohol team and knowing I have a high level of support in place reduces my anxiety and is so important to my recovery." 🥰

Gynaecology Ward - an emotional and demanding environment, but even through the most difficult moments, the team remains a constant presence, providing emotional and physical support. Colleagues listen without judgement, offer quiet reassurance, and advocate strongly to ensure every patient’s voice is heard 🙌

Urgent Suspected Lower GI Cancer Service - small team, big impact. 77% of patients now receive a definitive diagnosis within just 28 days of referral. For patients, the difference is huge. Those without cancer get reassurance faster, easing anxiety and uncertainty, while patients with a diagnosis can begin the right treatment and support without delay 🫶

The Frances Centre STAR Workers - the team created a memorable Dementia Action Week event, bringing patients and their loved ones together through live music and refreshments. The event at Aintree University Hospital created a warm, welcoming atmosphere where people could connect, share meaningful moments and enjoy time together 🥰

ITV Granada visited Aintree University Hospital as part of a special series exploring the growing number of serious e-bike incidents and the life-changing consequences they can have for patients and their families 📺

The report follows Drew, who was treated at Aintree after an e-bike crash left him with a bleed on the brain, a fractured spine and multiple broken bones 🚲

Our Major Trauma Centre team, including Dr Libby Ensor, Emergency Medicine Consultant, and Helene Stevenson, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, explain the increase in serious injuries they are seeing and the challenges faced by patients on the road to recovery.

As one of only 12 Major Trauma Centres in England, Aintree provides specialist, round-the-clock care for seriously injured patients from across the North West.

As a specialist hospital, we are pleased to have been able to share our expertise with several hospitals across North West England and Wales to enable them to introduce advanced pacemaker techniques for patients.

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) is one of the busiest cardiac device implanters in the country whilst also offering follow-up care for cardiac devices.

Dr Patrick Hayle, Consultant Cardiologist at LHCH has been part of the highly skilled team helping to deliver this and shared:

“We’ve been pleased to support the introduction of Left Bundle Branch Area Pacing (LBBaP) technique, a type of Conduction System Pacing, to some hospitals across the region.

“Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital has been performing this technique and other forms of conduction system pacing for several years. LHCH is currently taking part in a large national research trial to understand what role this type of pacing might have in the future.

“This type of pacing technique allows the heart to beat more naturally when stimulated by the pacemaker and we hope this will reduce the need for further procedures or medications for our patients in the future.

“It's amazing to be part of the team helping to roll this out across Liverpool and the wider population and supporting other hospitals to deliver the same excellent care. Plans are also underway to extend this support out to other centres across the UK which is fantastic for patients.”
